Tumblr didn't exist when the cultural appropriation drama happened. It was some retarded maori shithole tribes that started bitching about lego using maori words for toys year after that Bionicle were first released in 2001. The only thing that happened due to it is that lego decided to stop using maori words in the future, this never resulted in legal action and the toy line continued for nearly a decade.
These retarded Bionicle debates related to real-life politics always make me laugh. Toa in Bionicle are basically super cops and they fight with Piraka which are an allegory for niggers (word Piraka is a slur meaning thug/bandit) and their motto is Unity, Duty, Destiny, promoting virtues of cooperation, hard work and obeying the law.

They were around when the Lego movie was made. Lego made sure Bionicle weren’t reference in any Lego movie.
Recently, Disney admitted chattering to Disney adults ended up hurting the company in the long run because kids are now not interested in Disney.

Yeah but I don't recall tumblr bitching about maori drama at all. This stuff happened over a decade before the movie (and bionicle was already dead for a few years by then) and Lego just in general has not been fond of Bionicle toyline for a long while. They considered it a failure franchise and not fitting LEGO since they were more like action figures than building block toys.
Bionicle sold rather poorly in the last few years which led to them cutting it short after 2009 movie which was originally supposed to be a first part of a trilogy, replacing it with Hero Factory (which also flopped).
Shortly afterwards they made Ninjago line which became an enormous success and although Bionicle was revived briefly it got quickly cut as it was thought that it's better to keep milking Ninjago franchise rather than try anything else.
Lego's hatred of Bionicle has more to do with corporate and internal politics in the company bullshit than anything related to reddit and tumblr.
The current "bionicle community" is an inbred bastard child that was born from the fact that only the most autistic and mentally ill people continued obsessing for over a decade over this old discontinued toyline that even lego didn't want to revive.
They very much remind me of that guy who made that retarded Hills Have Eyes video and accused Wendigoon of being an alt-right neonazi, or the Harry Potter tumblr/reddit fandom that has went against JK Rowling because of muh transphobia - They are mentally stunted manchildren who cannot simply enjoy things from their childhood and instead need to feel constantly validated in all their beliefs in every hobby they have. You can't just enjoy a franchise, you also need to identify with it on a personal level and if anything seems contradictory to your ideals then you have to make up ridiculous copes to handle it (horror movies was actually always about love and compassion; XYZ movie/book was actually always about fighting for trans rights; etc).
