Five hundred and sixty bucks for this?

"I paid a thousand!"

ASOBI is anything but "Japanese" and ultimately what replaced Japan Studio in a political move by the Californian branch of SIE, with the same french dude Nicolas Doucet placed at the head, all while losing all the former key talents.

Also this game is more a graveyard of the former Playstation's IPs than a celebration. Imagine playing a proverbial living museum dedicated to the history of one of the leading companies in the gaming industry, only to realize that it's more of a mausoleum dedicated to everything they've killed and abandoned in the endless pursuit of greener pastures filled with infinite profits for vulture shareholders. That's Astro Bot even if it may look like a decent game in itself.

You're kidding right ? I can name several games such as Earth Defense Force 6 and its spinoff World Brothers 2, Unicorn Overlord, Gundam Breaker 4 and Shiren 6.
It's an okay year at the very worst but what you named are just a blip in my radar.
Oh man, look at all of that weeb Bamco garbage.

EDF6 isn't a live service and has a way larger gallery of weapons & enemies than Helldivers 2 though.
Additionally, it's a much better approach than claiming like a casual that there are no good games because you refuse to do your research beyond the mainstream and go out of your comfort zone. I do focus primarily on JP vidya for sure but even then I can still enjoy western titles like Dying Light 1, Kingdom Come Deliverance (both recently on Switch) and I'm eager to try out Space Marine 2 on someone's PS5.

Hating on Japanese stuff sounds like a recipe for misery and self-depression these days, but then again I'm neither american or anglo so I don't have this bizarre virtue-signal culture thing.

Astro Bot is basically what happens if someone decided to take the bonus worlds from Super Mario Galaxy or 3D World and designed an entire game around them. Most level's are devoid of flair, instead you just encounter colourful shapes, bot-like foes and some Sony branding elements with eyes attached to them. Which itself baffles me. You have so many legacy elements to work with given the IP's you are trying to celebrate and instead we get "random goo guy five" and "robo parrot" to halt the platforming efforts.

Meanwhile themed levels typically don't even have Astrobots relevant to them, constantly making you question who assigned them. For example, why is Psycho Mantis in an ice cream world? Why is Ryu from Street Fighter stuck in a voxel world? Who thought that Singstar should have more presence than some of the other IP's in-game and why is it in a Castle level? Only the truly "protected" IP's produced by Sony are themed correctly. Those levels will contain specialised gimmicks relevant to those games and actual enemy variety that makes sense. Basically what I am getting at is the Ape Escape level actually plays like Ape Escape and LocoRoco plays like LocoRoco and it angers me to think it's wasted here. The other three "protected" levels are just modern Sony slop tributes and happen so late into Astro Bot, you are again left questioning who assigned the ordering of things.

Frankly the bot representation is the most upsetting thing to me. You need to collect 300 or so of these suckers to 100% the game, yet around 2 out of 5 are themed per-level. Hell, I did some counting upon finishing this title. I'd say close to 50 of the 300 are licenced via third parties. Microsoft, EPIC, Embracer, Capcom, Namco and Konami being the only notable brands here. Yup, not a single Square Enix rep made it in. Hell one of the last bots you can get is a Tony Hawk tribute...

But let's ignore the licenced side of things for a moment shall we and allow me to list off some of the notable Sony owned IP that didn't even get a single Astro Bot:
  • EyeToy
  • Fat Princess
  • Gitaroo Man
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Heavy Rain
  • Helldivers
  • Infamous
  • Resistance
  • Siren
  • SOCOM
  • Syphon Filter
  • Twisted Metal
Least we got Knack I guess... But that itself is another thing. What games that did get Astro Bots, the lucky ones that did get featured; many aren't obtainable to buy via PSN or haven't been legally obtainable outside of Japan in general. Games like Tokyo Jungle or Intelligent Qube are given fanfare and yet, that's it. For some, Sony made a touching tribute to it's 30's years in game dev. To me? Upon collecting this all? I had a shallow, melancholy reflection at my screen, looking at what is in essence, digital gravestones to an era long since gone by.

Let’s not forget that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was a PS5 exclusive for years before it was ported to PC. So it’s not fair to say that AstroBot is the first real exclusive.

… because it’ll also be ported within like a year tops.
And people will make lots of awesome mods for it.

So out of all the first party Sony game that came out for the PS5 for the past 4 years, only 7 games are worth your time:
  • Nioh 1-2
  • Stellar Blade
  • Rise of the Rōnin
  • Demon's Souls (soulless compare to the original aesthetic)
  • 2 Astro games
But honestly all of them are inferior to their older inspiration. Team Ninja games aren't as good as souls game or even older ninja gaiden games imo. Stellar Blade lack focus, Demon's Souls is soulless. Astro games are pretty good, but not as good as the best 3D platformers like Mario Galaxy, and it's sad to see all the reference to Sony's dead franchise.

I would add Ghosts of Tsushima to that list. I thoroughly enjoyed that game. As far as Team Ninja goes, I enjoyed both Nioh titles, but nothing compares to Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2. Those two games were ahead of their time.

only reason I didn't add ghosts of tsushima it's because that it has lesbian grandma in it and I hate open world.

Due to recent update on the ShadPS4 emulator, we can somewhat run Bloodborne on PC now.
Of course, it comes with it's own set of issues for now (like only being barely playable on Nvidia, & very buggy on AMD, etc.). But it's possible that the biggest reason to buy a PS4 might die by the end of this year.

Nioh 1 is a PS4 game that came out in 2017 and also came to PC later that year. Nioh 2 is another PS4 game that came out in 2020 and released simultaneously on the PS5 and PC a year later. Demon's Souls is a remake of a PS3 game.

So that leaves the 2 Astro games, Stellar Blade, and Rise of the Ronin but I have heard nothing amazing about RotR. I didn't follow the game too much but all I got from peoples' impressions was that it was a step above "mid".
I would add Ghosts of Tsushima to that list
Also a PS4 game

Not a fan of lesbian grandma either, but there was a lesbian grandma in Rise of the Ronin, and Rise of the Ronin itself was an open world game lol.
