I would think the prosecutor (and good defense atty) would have a good idea what the sentence a judge would give if Nick he were convicted at trial. A plea offer would have to be better than that.

Nick’s chances for a “good” deal decrease each time he accuses County officials of being liars or manufacturing evidence or trumping up charges against him. The more he does that, the more likely it is that the County Attorney is going to say “It’s worth spending the money taking this case to trial rather than letting Nick walk with a deal just so that I can rebut in Court these false accusations against my department, the Court, County Police, and CPS”.
