YouTube Ads Will Now Play Even When Your Video Is Paused - YouTube has taken its advertising efforts to a new level, following its recent implementation of longer unskippable ads.

YouTube has taken its advertising efforts to a new level, following its recent implementation of longer unskippable ads. The platform now displays ads even when users pause their videos.

Confirming the rollout on Thursday, the Google-owned company announced that “Pause ads” are now available to all advertisers. When users pause a video, an ad will appear on the side of the screen, disrupting any brief reprieve viewers might have expected.

A Google spokesperson described the change as “seamless for viewers” and an opportunity to engage more effectively with brands. “It’s been a beneficial update for the entire YouTube ecosystem and one of the elements of the modern CTV (connected TV) ads experience,” the spokesperson added. The news was first reported by The Verge.

While YouTube claims the update offers a less intrusive experience, social media users have expressed frustration with the inescapable nature of the new ads. This comes amid increasing criticism of the platform for bombarding viewers with more ads.

For those looking to avoid ads altogether, YouTube Premium offers an ad-free experience for $13.99 per month, making it a go-to solution for frequent users.

The introduction of pause ads was first tested in 2023, primarily on internet-connected TVs (CTV). Philipp Schindler, the head of sales for Google and YouTube, noted during an Alphabet earnings call that the feature gained significant traction during the pilot phase.

Although the company did not disclose detailed financial figures, it confirmed that the new ad format has been profitable.

uBlock Origin has yet let to me down in terms of YouTube. Somehow Twitch found a way around it though.
I've been experimenting with additional add-ons such as TTVLOL and Purple Ad Blocker, but they seem to be hit or miss with how well they work. Right now I think I fucked something up because Twitch's video player doesn't even load in my browser anymore presumably because one of the ad blockers isn't working right following an update, or Twitch has rolled out an update where if it detects one of the blockers I have installed then it just doesn't load the player at all.

It's going to be like trying to use a news website. You want an article but 400 fucking ads are on the screen and then a mid article ad roll then another video ad playing on top. YouTube making the ad roll the comments down and show a huge fuck off area to accidentally hit and ruin the video watching experience is what they want. More click through events, unskipable ads, the slight pause before letting you tap through them. Un fucking usable. It's what they want.

Especially when they started filling the ad roll with their shit house AI generated ads straight from Google. At least I wouldn't have to hear the same fucking fuzzyhaired coconut nigger dancing to another fucking temu ad.

Total alphabet death soon.

I just want to be able to sign an affidavit that affirms I am racist, etc, and opposed to everything these companies stand for. And in exchange, they'll stop serving me ads because they don't want my money. After all, they will gladly say that they're not targeting me with their marketing. Continuing to try to do so is an offensive assault, pretty much.

YouTube has ads? I think I noticed they had them for 15 minutes when they started their "war on adblockers" and I couldn't watch videos without disabling them, and haven't noticed since my free ad blockers updated (Godspeed, programming autists).

The only marginal concern would be them baking adverts into the video so ad blockers can't differentiate, but we had ad-skipping VCRs in the 90s and AdBlock Plus could recognise sponsored content segments. I gurantee if they start baking them in, someone will rapidly come up with a plugin that can stream an entire video into a file, remove adverts and then show you the edited version on the fly.

Like what?
We have Rumble, Odysee, and Bitchute that have existed for almost a decade.
These are not new, nor novel, platforms and the people holding out are only doing themselves a disservice.
But, like I fucking said, people are only going to use what they're given.
If Google is their default search engine, than they'll use that.
If Youtube is preinstalled on their phone, they'll use that.
Whatever browser is preinstalled on their phone is what they'll use.

Alternative Player for Twitch.tv

Point is, I'm not watching/hearing that shit, and if it ever comes to "eye trackers" like in that meme image, it's not going to work on PC unless it's mandated that a camera is used. By that point I assume the social outrage will (hopefully) create alternatives.
Can't wait till the eye trackers are declared racist when it won't allow Chinks to watch videos. The eye trackers won't last.

Looked this one up on the Firefox add-ons website and it worked on the first try. I disabled uBlock, TTVLOL, and Purple Ads and added this one and a stream loaded instantly. Thank you.
The quality drops when an ad is "playing" but I've never actually seen an ad get through. I don't really use twitch that much so maybe there's some fuckery to get around that.

So what adblockers do you guys recommend so I don't have to deal with this bullshit?
ReVanced, BraveNewPipe or GrayJay on Android phones.
Brave or Firefox with uBlock Origin and SponsorBlock on desktop.
People have made better platforms, but normies will always stick with the default experience.
I've started weaning myself off YT since installing GrayJay, as users can follow their favourite creators across multiple video platforms.

Many of the channels I follow are mirrored to Rumble or Odysneed, so I prefer to watch content there if I can. That being said, both of these alternatives are kinda janky compared to YT, so you need to be patient... which is guess is why normies will probably stick with YT and its shitty stock app for the foreseeable.
