With respect, I think that you may be foisting your hatred for modern politicians onto a dude who's been dead for almost two centuries. The Federalists do not align with modern Democrats very well and, to be fair, neither do the Democratic-Republicans.

Federalists were:

• Anti-immigration
• Pro-tariffs
• Pro-strong federal government and federal infrastructure
• In favor of pro-British foreign policy

Democratic-Republicans were:

• Pro-immigration
• Anti-tariffs
• Pro-states' rights and against federal infrastructure
• In favor of pro-French foreign policy

The only issues still relevant to contemporary political discussion are immigration (which was a different animal back in the early 1800's than today) and the power of the federal government which, unfortunately, is almost a moot point. Thomas Jefferson shaped the presidency into a cabinet-oriented institution rather than one dominated by Congress. Andrew Jackson furthered this. Abraham Lincoln left a lasting impact on presidential power, but I think that he deserves an asterisk there because he dealt with something no president ever faced before or ever again. Wilson, FDR, and then Truman especially sealed the deal on creating what some scholars refer to as "the imperial presidency."

Nixon actually tried to rein in the federal government and we all saw how that went, but most modern presidents - Democrat and Republican - have embraced this. Trump is one of the only candidates to openly rail against federal overreach and there have already been four known assassination attempts on him.

As for Notley she's the one-time NDP governing fluke for Alberta who retired after losing twice to a unified provincial Conservative party - and the last loss being against the best possible candidate for her in Danielle Smith.

One more example on how intertwined leftwing politics is in both our countries since the provincial and federal level share a lot of the same nebulous think tanks and advisors as Democratic campaigns and administrations.

Washington did a pretty good job handling the French revolution. Stayed the hell out of it even when tensions were high and recognized it was all a bad idea. Funny story the French ambassador at the time tried to recruit American citizens to join France in it's revolution and got in a lot of hot water with Washington. Later the Dude comes back after his government tries to arrest and kill him for being old autocracy and he begs Washington for political asylum. Washington grants it with no strings and the dude became his biggest fan on the planet.

King George was genuinely awestruck that he stepped down from being a president. To the point were he said he was the greatest man in the world for doing that.

To be fair to Adams, the Senate passed the Alien and Sedition Acts and he did it to stop the Quasi-War with France from blowing up into an actual war. Adams does not get enough credit for preventing an open war between the US and France. Almost all Americans now regard that legislation as a mistake and its contents were either repealed or expired on their own. Adams did not want to sign it, but he was heavily pressured by other Federalists to do so (which he regretted because the Federalists ended up fucking him anyway). Also, since it happened before Marbury v. Madison, it has never been legally reviewed - and even if it were, it would undoubtedly get struck down as unconstitutional.

What tanked the re-election of John Adams was both Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton utterly slamming him publicly. His own party screwed him. Adams and Jefferson were close friends before that and it almost destroyed their relationship until Benjamin Rush convinced Adams to reconcile with Jefferson.

All this historical context and opinion aside: your point about the Federalists doing some offensive shit is correct. My ultimate point is that not all the Federalists were scumbags.
