Once Edgy - Now pearl clutchers.

Over the last decade or so, I've noticed a bunch of media, celebrities, communities, and companies once know for being edgy are now the biggest milquetoast pearl clutchers in existence. Some seem to have trolls remorse, others got infiltrated by troons, and others I don't know what happened.

The inspiration for this thread was the news that Cards Against Humanity, the edgy, offensive card game from a decade ago, is suing Elon Musk due to Elon Derangement Syndrome and Trump Derangement Syndrome.

It got me thinking of other examples. The Church of Satan having strict mask mandates, Mortal Kombat covering up revealing character outfits, Saints Row going from an over the top game about gang bangers to lecturing about student loans, Dungeons and Dragons being more interested in wheelchairs and race relations than fantasy adventure, and Dee Snider going from singing "We're Not Gonna Take it" demanding everyone bend over for the government.

The Doom community is one that gets me. Kicking out the creator of Brutal Doom ostensibly for telling a suicidal person to kill themselves (by linking a wikipedia article), but to me always seemed like an excuse to get rid of him because his mod was more popular than theirs. Fuck, the Doom community in general kicking people out if they don't post progressive politics is baffling given that Doom was an ultra violent game about killing demons. Especially since the games themselves continue to piss off pearl clutchers to this day. Now that I think about it, between Dungeons and Dragons, Doom, and the Church of Satan, a lot of these involve demons.

I've never really thought of Dungeons and Dragons as edgy.
But to answer your question, consider how mainstream these hobbies, groups, and people are now, and how underground or relatively unpopular they used to be.
The counter-culture is always doomed to become the culture, the punks and squares doomed to become the preps and the hipsters.

Of course, it could just be that other people possess different beliefs than you do, but that's a boring explanation.

I think its for marketing. Market your product to as many people as possible=more profits. Its why they put gay flags on everything each year. The down side with marketing for everyone is everything just starts blending together and the product look no different from the other products. Nothing is allowed to stand out anymore because it may scare away the consumer base or put the company in a bad light.

People are saying they starting to slow things down now that the economy has gone down the shiter but i still think we have to wait another 10-15 years to see the rot fully disappear.

A few of these people I have talked to in real life about things like this, The "class clown" or whatever it used to be called. Didn't even understand why they were doing it in the first place. Alot of times people can't truly understand their own behavior until later on in life when they are in a different situation and see things from above or adjacent to their old mindset. When you live in a certain situation ( regardless of what it is ) you have things in control of you that you don't even have the ability to make out. The person I had talked to about it was in a high pressure situation and simply didn't have any coping skills so he made thing's jokes to laugh at it and make the stress go away. As simple as stress management is it wasn't something he was taught so it manifested as this "class clown" persona. Later on in his years, he started to notice that went away when the high stress situations he faced daily were gone. He started to regret ( more just be disappointment ) about the way he behaved because it wasn't truly him and he couldn't even see it.

This is one thing that alot of lolcows who became un-lolcowed ( or at the least designate ) have happen to them. Whatever it is that made them into what they are eventually burns out or fades away in some fashion and that means the idea behind who they are starts to erode and thus them. Whatever reasoning is behind it is all universal in the design of why they come down. You get some sort of influence that you don't understand or see, it makes you into something then it produces you. When it goes away you are now living as something and someone else that doesn't naturally do what it is that you were doing before.

Mike Tyson is an example of this. His youth was filled with arrests fighting and general anger towards the world around him for this that and the other reason. He became dangerous and was someone that many people feared because of it. But when he grew up later on in his life and stopped being taken advantage of he started to see the error in his ways but now has this ( and it is to an extent who he is ) persona of a wrecking ball of a human. I can't remember off top the interview of where he said it, but he said he feels weak given who he is now that he is calmer and less angry but still feels his old mindset going on. What was in control of him and his surroundings made him into something he should have never had become but became it anyway and is now seeing what it was like if he never was that person initially. TL : DR they burn out eventually cause the reason why who they are is gone.

Their is more too this but I would have to start my own thread on it. This video even though it's from the Simpsons isn't too far from the truth.

The most obvious place to see this is youtube. So many guys who made their bread and butter being edgy and offensive have become milquetoast champions of the status quo.

At the end of the day it's just because they know that as trained monkeys dancing, they are completely beholden to the whims of society. Society now dictates they must be tolerant, offensive jokes bad, etc.

They're either entirely spineless and have no real convictions, or they have to bend those convictions to appease society.

With what I said, both are true in their own right. While they are there for entertainment, they simply can be worn out or far removed from what they used to be.

How exactly is he kicked out? Was he kicked out of some faggy Discord server because he can always post his mod on Moddb and still do his thing regardless of what anyone thinks of him.

The problem is that troons and faggots dictate what is edgy more than actual edgelords now.
Which is why there's been a rise of safe-edgy goyslop (The Boys, Invincible, Ultrakill, etc).
"It got me thinking of other examples. The Church of Satan having strict mask mandates."
That's not really surprising since Satanism is gay in itself.

The boring answer is that people that start things that are cool and edgy and fun grow up and get bored and move on, leaving that cool thing a shallow husk of itself that can be picked apart by vultures. As you get older, you have more to lose in life and more skin in the game; along with creeping closer to your own mortality. For most people, these are natural deterrents to taking a lot of risks or being edgy. Personally a lot of times things that seemed cool and edgy when I was younger are really just performative nonsense you do to impress people, and you stop giving a shit about what people who don't know you think about you as you get old too.
But I would say there's a difference between getting old and going back on your principals. I'll never stop saying words like faggot or retard, because they're fun to say. But indulging in things like gore/shock videos, being a total cunt to someone for no reason, or a myriad of other things online/off I did as a teen and in my 20s I just don't have the energy for now.
TLDR: you become a soft pussy who's afraid of dying as you get old

there's a natural part to it where the goofballs/edgy/teenager crowd just ... grows up.

But this is something different, it's like they're trying to pretend they're still the edgy teenager whilst being fat, balding, and in their 40s.

Honestly, I think the "which parties they can get invited to" part is pretty explanatory.

There's also an element of pulling the ladder up behind them. However, if they fall, they've also removed their own means of getting back up the ladder.

A more general example is how someone will start appealing to a niche, get big enough to go mainstream, then discard their own fanbase to chase the larger pool of normies. Once those normies get bored and move on to the next thing, they come crawling back to the old fans who have usually moved on by then.
Nostalgia Critic and AVGN used to say retard and make rape jokes, now they don't
Linkara and GameGrumps too.

He was kicked out of the various big Doom communities. ModDB is a big site that covers more than just Doom so the drama didn't really spread there, and his mod is popular enough that he isn't beholden to the Doom modding community. That's a good thing imo. Those Doom communities didn't deserve him.

This got me thinking. In a way, it's both. People make edgy jokes when young as they don't care who they piss off, because anyone who gets mad at that stuff deserves it. At the same time, it's the opposite.

But this is something different, it's like they're trying to pretend they're still the edgy teenager whilst being fat, balding, and in their 40s.
This is especially true when they become the establishment. I still see lefties that insist they're the counter culture or "punk" despite having the backing of every major western government and corporation.

There's that, but also somewhat of a risk/reward issue - just like how in investment, when young, you should go kind of batshit (overleverage, lean on bankruptcy, try that startup) but as you get older and have actual assets and a family, you pull back to safer, more reliable investments that won't moon, but also won't null. (Get it?)

The very concept of liberalism involves fighting against an oppressor on behalf of the oppressed - which is why it goes completely schitzo when it is in power, as it must simultaneously be the oppressor AND the oppressed.

All you have to do to stay edgy is decline the software updates.

he's varying degrees of persona non grata on the handful of popular forums at the center of the Doom community. it doesn't really matter because, in addition to moddb, he has his own Discord server for Brutal Doom and a YouTube channel where he posts devlog updates for Brutal Doom and Brutal Fate. a few of the doomtroons are really mad about him, but it doesn't keep him from doing his thing, nor does it keep sites like Doomworld from being largely apolitical creator collectives that reliably churn out interesting shit. Doom community politics are largely relegated to the lowest grade of retard, because everyone with a brain is either making shit or playing the shit that people have made instead of sucking each other's girldicks on page 36 of a thread whose only noteworthy content is contained entirely in the OP.

this, but also, youth counterculture becomes the dominant culture as the new generation ages and the older generations die off. what was edgy once (i.e. hideously cursed rule34 pictures) becomes the mainstream as those edgelords become the establishment (i.e. modern coomer culture) and two types of people become apparent: the reactionary retard who was always just stunting for attention, who quickly becomes cringe as their true character is revealed (Maddox) vs the autist who was always just being true to what was in their heart, and continues to do so despite suddenly attracting a much larger amount of attention (Shadman lol). in both cases, the edge has disappeared with the movement of culture.
