/horror/ general megathread - Let's talk about movies and shit.

So John Carpenter has a letterboxd where he is reviewing movies.

edit: Looks like he killed it, still archive has it all, but he did warn us
Thankfully the archive preserved us some goodies, however if you try to expand on some of the longer reviews the page’ll only refresh.

I did finally watch 8MM (1999). It was on my "to watch" list for decades and I tried committing to it a million years ago but Cage's performance was taking me out of it. Whenever Cage decides to play it totally straight the movie tends to suffer (excluding something like Drive Angry). I thought it was just "okay" not great but not bad. Ballsy to an extent for the year it came out but one could easily remake this and with a few changes make it one of the most depraved movies ever made. Essentially making it into A Serbian Film. I didn't like the plot twists but it was a solid mainstream Hollywood horror/thriller about snuff films and it's worth a watch.

I'm tempted to watch the direct to video sequel for shits 'n giggles.

Am I the only one who actually really liked Halloween 2?
I like both Halloween 2's. The 1981 picture I enjoy largely for the environment. There is a shockingly low number of slashers or any horror films set inside hospitals and the movie makes the most of that location. The kills are the cherry on top. In fact, I enjoy it more than the original.

The Rob Zombie Halloween 2 I enjoy despite some mistakes Rob made like having Michael walk around without the mask on and "Die!" at the end -but only in the director's cut. I like how uncomfortable Rob makes his Halloween 2 and appreciate the attempts at arthouse through the dream sequences.

Just watched Possession (1981) today.
Overall... I liked it a good bit. But it really is one of those that insists upon itself. I straight up love arthouse horror but it just felt overly long and trying a little too hard at times. Honestly the acting is topnotch and the most uncomfortable scenes to watch were just of the couple screaming at eachother. But yeah, just really felt pretentious for me at times but still appreciated it.

Then I found out the director of fucking Smile is doing a remake of it.
God help us all.

Dude one of my favorite films is Suspiria. I like "high art". I just think some films disappear up their own ass at a certain point. It felt a little too long and the subplots being intentionally vague didn't really make me feel engrossed, just a little annoyed. Still great, but I feel like it loses some steam after the tunnel scene. Then again I just have a dislike for when films are intentionally trying to have very convoluted narratives just to confuse the audience. Repo Man and Inherent Vice also fall in that category. I don't mind films being surreal, I just think at certain times they're trying too hard to fit be self-labelled arthouse films.
I liked A Zed and Two Noughts, which feels like the closest thing to being similar in tone but I liked more.

Well it was just as gut-wrenching as I remember it being when I first saw it lol. Not sure I would quite put it at the level of squeamish and disturbing as Todd Solondz's Happiness, but it's certainly up there. They belong in the same genre: horrifying hilarity. Felt really itchy and filthy while watching it, so I guess it did its job. Wouldn't watch it again, but I recommend everyone see it at least once, at least with a barf bag on disposal. I've yet to see a film that's anything like it.
Great movie, but also pretty disturbing (and hilarious). I need to watch more of Harmony Korine's works.

Ken Park is one of those movies that is so scarily? gross that I never want to watch again. It didn't help that I watched it when I was 7 on a late night. For the longest time I thought this movie was a shitty fever dream.

Also, didn't knew Patrick Star's voice actor played the role of a cuck in this movie.

Though the only parts of Ken Park I enjoy are of the guy who lives with his grandparents, they make the film worth watching once. Speaking of Korine, I wish he had continued with his project of filming himself starting fights with strangers and getting beaten up.

Anyone who say's "It insists upon itself" deserves to die. Sorry not sorry.

Ken Park is good but not really horror. Fun exploitation pseudo-arthouse picture.

Funny story, I discovered this movie on complete accident when browsing YouTube. The thumbnail was Tiffany Limos lying naked in bed and the video title promised me a full movie so curiosity got the best of me. Movie doesn’t buffer correctly after 10 minutes of waiting so I skip forward to see if that fixes it, first scene I’m suddenly greeted with is the guy shooting his brains out onto the camera. Fun times.

Haven’t seen the film since them. Perhaps it’s time to give this one a rewatch too, eh?

Wtf now I really need to see this movie again lmao.

I will try to remember this shit come decembe

There's also stuff like Tales From the Crypt episode "All Through the House" directed by Bobby Z; I think Christmas is probably better suited for shorter/anthology pieces

some claim the 1963 adaptation is great, wasn't my thing

There aren't a lot of black and white widescreen movies. Ok well letterboxd says there's 117 of them but a lot are Asian.

Then I found out the director of fucking Smile is doing a remake of it.

They're going to make the whole plot "lore" about the pink socks guy, no doubt.

I love Halloween 4 but I'm not a fan of the ending. Truly the only great sequel. Season of the Witch obv my second favorite "sequel"

Halloween 2 is ass but I disagree with the opinion on the score. It's a great techno remix of the first films tracks. Energetic and tasteful personal touches from Rosenthal.

IT has a lot of great moments, like George being lured into the sewer and the animated bloody photo album, however it has a lot of boring exposition that's not expressed with any real enthusiasm which was a big problem with made for TV Stephen King adaptations in the 90s
