Hurricane Helene / Invest 97L

It's fucking going crazy where I live and the storm isn't even on me. I'm worried our power will eventually go out. Our power company sucks, they haven't kept up the lines in quite a few years and trees have grown into them. It's gone out before during mild wind. We've had a few people die in the winter because of this.

Oh, and our power pole caught on fire earlier this year. We couldn't get a hold of the company and ended up having to call emergency services. They had trouble getting a hold of them, too. The power company just let it burn for hours until finally turning the power off. No idea how the power stayed on during that, though.

They're hiring the illegal immigrants to fix shit now and one of them was running with a line straight into the road and we had to put on breaks to avoid hitting him. I'm concerned, to say the least. I hate that power companies have monopolies and when they mess up the state bails them out.

Over a dozen flash flood emergencies. Holy shit.
Here's an example of a warning, also they are reporting hundreds of trees down making rescue difficult. Reports of landslides and the risk of them increasing with the excessive rain.
* At 724 AM EDT, emergency management reported widespread catastrophic flooding across these counties. Numerous roadways are flooded and impassable, and hundreds of trees are down across the area amid completely saturated ground. Many water rescues are ongoing. In Jackson County, evacuations of low-lying areas are already underway. At least one landslide has been reported by emergency management, resulting in a partial closure of highway 64 in Jackson County.
This is a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY for Jackson and Transylvania Counties. This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!
HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding.
SOURCE...Emergency management reported.
IMPACT...This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW! Life threatening flash flooding of low water crossings, small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Dangerous landslide activity. Numerous road closures and damage to infrastructure. Inundation of homes and businesses. Dangerous high water flows, especially along the Tuckasegee River.
* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Brevard, Sylva, Cherokee, Cullowhee, Highlands, Balsam, Rosman, Webster, Dillsboro, Cashiers, Black Balsam Area, Lake Toxaway, B.R. Parkway-Balsam Gap To Black Balsam Area, Lake Glenville, Gorges State Park, B.R. Parkway-Black Balsam To Mount Pisgah, Lake Jocassee, Looking Glass, B.R. Parkway-Smoky Mountains To Balsam Gap and Mount Pisgah.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Move to higher ground now! This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.
Heavy rain is significantly increasing the risk of landslides, especially in areas where slides have occurred in the past. Slides can destroy single homes and other structures and large sections of roads. If you are in the warned area, you should not travel, except to move away from flash flood or landslide dangers. If you are in the vicinity of a stream near the heavy rainfall, especially on a mountainside, or at the base of a mountain or in a cove, move immediately to a safer location.

LAKE LURE DAM IMMINENT FAILURE ALERT!

The Dam is expected to fail and mandatory evacuations below the dam flood plain have been issued. Potential for loss of life is quite large if they do not evacuate and the dam does indeed breach. It is reported the dam is being eroded and expected to fail.

Central FL lives, some random branches on the way in to work and puddles. Power flickered once or twice but that's about it.

Engaging in mild bantz with my dad about the idea that even though he moved from South FL to Ohio we're still getting the same storms

I-40W is completley washed-out near the NC/TN state line and most other nearby interstates and highways are also closed in that region. You're especially fucked if you happened to get caught in this because this is right in the middle of a twenty mile stretch of interstate cutting through bumfuck nowhere with only a few exits for small mountain roads that are also probably washed-out or flooded.

It is astonishing just how much mountainous terrain concentrates water. In the UK we had a catastrophic flood at a little place called boscastle in the early aughts, and I think it was less than three inches of rain, but because the ground was already saturated and this huge catchment dumps into a tiny valley, it washed away stone buildings. That’s just from a tiny amount of rain. There’s rivers in NZ where there are markers at fifty plus and eighty plus feet marking historical floods in gorges. These slow rivers turn into monsters with heavy rain.

We currently have nearly double the amount of Flash Flood Emergencies in a single day as the previous record, and we're not done yet. Source

Looks like western North Carolina is completely blocked off from the rest of the US, since all the interstates are either closed due to major flooding or collapsed. This will make search and rescue near impossible in some cases. Source

Please stay safe kiwis. Evacuate to higher ground if you're told to by local law enforcement, or if you get warnings. Check on your family if they're in Tennessee/North Carolina/South Carolina.
