I live in the tn/NC area. I didn't get flooding but everything around me did. A lot of the interstates are completely collapsed. I grew up in Florida but I don't remember this level of devastation, but then again Florida's buildings are built for that
You'd probably have to go back to Andrew to get anything comparable although the hurricane season of 2005 was also pretty bad (though it was spread across 4 storms). Florida buildings are mostly designed to withstand hurricane force winds, but the big difference here is that Florida is flat so it's very easy to plan for 100 year/1000 year floods and not build anything important on those flood plains. In Appalachia they can't really do that because everywhere you can affordably build infrastructure is in flood plains. So, from a risk mitigation standpoint, most of the mountainous parts of Appalachia probably shouldn't be inhabited but no one wants to hear that because it's very nice when it isn't being washed into the Atlantic.

I remember Hurricane Andrew. So many thought that it wouldn't do anything, but it did.

Deaths from Katrina were over 1,000, so far Helene's numbers are less than 100 but of course it's early. Structure damage is insane. Infrastructure damage is insane.
Cost of building materials nationwide are going to go way up.

I remember after Katrina some dumb bitch I knew talking about it, saying "Well you know, New Orleans is a Sin City!" I responded with something like, "Yeah all those babies and toddlers with their vices, eh?" She stopped bringing it up around me after that.

Watch out if the Duggar family's MEDIC Corps show up, they steal supplies.

I am very scatterbrained this morning.

I will say, out of the bigger organizations, the United Way of North Carolina is very much worth donating to.

Samaritan’s Purse is still the best.

There’s very few organizations stepping in at this point, mainly because there’s no way of getting in. The NCDOT closed 40 west of Statesville.

To be fair (ick), there’s a shitload of news outlets who can’t make heads or tails of how to get in the area, and maybe that’s a good thing. Don’t need journalists clogging vital roads or real estate.

Even here in the rest of the state, there’s very little trickling down.

EDIT: Day One Relief in Chapel Hill and Next Level in Iron Station need funds; they‘re supposed to have boots on the ground already.

Took my wife to donate blood yesterday, if you're in NC just know they're pretty desperate for a blood stockpile judging by the increased incentives they're offering. Donation centers are pretty packed too which is heartening to see.

Wish I could do more to help, commie or no it sucks to see my fellow statesmen suffering from an act of God. :(

Even aside from the rescue shit they do which takes balls of steel, people overlook the fact that the Coast Guard does a lot of the work when it comes to fighting narcos etc. The reason US waters are considered safe from pirates is because a coast guard gunboat can fuck up anything short of a military battleship that tries anything.
The Coast Guard is honestly the most active military branch that actively does stuff for the country, every day. Just look up the wikipedia entries for some of their bigger cutters. They have caught some massive hauls of drugs and human smugglers. Massive, absolutely ginormous busts. God Bless the US Coast Guard. It is a good thing that they are on the ground for Helene. They have the most experience with this shit out of all the branches.
Got my power and Internet back just now.
Fucking awesome man.

Katrina was one of the first instances where melanin worship became too blatant for me to ignore. They reacted differently to that hurricane than any other in my lifetime that I can remember because it was heading straight for a densely packed black city, and then even during the rescue efforts they still treated the locals like sacred cows as they shot at the National Guard and looted drug houses.

If it's not at normal pressure, boil it before drinking.
Boil advisories are still up for nearly everywhere. I just want to shower but afraid the water will run out. It's not at normal pressure.
Some county in TN is reporting they've exhausted their water supply completely.

A YouTuber in Tennessee is helping.
Appalachia's Homestead with Patara community page
She lists a place to donate and the sort of things they are asking for.

I was thinking about what foods people need in this situation, and they will definitely want ready to eat stuff, since many won't have kitchens that work.
Granola bars, crackers, canned meats etc would probably be a good idea.
I know if I had to rebuild my whole life I sure as hell wouldn't feel like cooking.

@Croaking Spider I was wrong, seems like you guys might be ass pounded by flooding. Let us know if you lived later. :(

I'm still kicking, though how sore I've gotten from working a chainsaw has me feeling like an old fucking man. The worst we got was some minor flooding around lakes and rivers, but nothing on the scale of what I've seen on the news and in this thread. I'm lucky to be closer to the foothills of the Appalachia so we didn't have to deal with any mud/rock slides. The biggest issue around here were downed trees which have more or less been taken care of, at least as far as major roadways are concerned. My heart goes out to the kiwis who got it worse.
