I recall a story about the late Louisiana politician Edwin Edwards. During one of his non-consecutive terms as governor, he was caught up in a scandal involving illegal campaign contributions/bribery. His response to the scandal was to say something like (in a slightly Cajun-sounding accent), "It were illegal for him to give me da money; it were not illegal for me to take it."

Edwin was for sale, but he was entertaining and had style. He kept getting reelected because he made menopausal women's heart go pitter-pat and he bought the black vote by having his bribed ministers to give cash handouts. 50 dollars each was the number I heard, and the ministers got thousands, of course. And the good ol boys liked him because he was a hunter and you could always do business with Edwin. He was also very personable when you met him, he made you feel like he was genuinely interested by what you're saying. Bill Clinton had it in spades, but Edwin got a good dose of that, too.
It's interesting how there's been no federal response for the flooding from Hurricane Helene, and Biden is (perhaps truthfully) saying that they're not going to do anything "else" for the afflicted areas. In fact, it seems like the local government of Asheville is keeping people with donated resources away.

I know the feds give the Cajun Navy guys a hard time when they've shown up a few times in the past. They make FEMA look bad, and we can't have that.

I'm too worn out to make a whole thread on this, but not that long ago I made a joke that CNN should try to do a paid streaming service again and sure enough..

New YorkCNN —
CNN, one of the most popular news websites in the world, is starting to ask some of its visitors to pay $3.99 a month for access.

On Tuesday, the news organization is laying the first bricks in a so-called paywall that should, over time, help foot the bill for CNN’s journalism around the world.

Why are all of you doomposting about the debate? I’m actually excited to see Vance go AFTER the moderators, not so much Tim Walz. If you seen the hostile interviews he does, he’s really quick on his feet and can make the journos look like idiots even for the normies. It’s like an autistic superpower.
It's only the clueless people who haven't watched any clips of Vance's interviews with hostile journos. They never saw how effortless he rips into them, and uses their "attack" to make clear and concise points about how they're wrong and evil. They think he's going to be a incoherent retard like Trump, if he is against the same retarded tactics.

Seems that pushing the strike now, during a hurricane, just makes it easier for the Ports to paint the Unions as greedy and refuse to capitulate to "terrorists" exploiting a tragic situation to hurt the country. If anything, they could probably use this to get Federal funding to fully automate (like foreign ports have been moving towards) on the grounds of national security, to keep this sort of situation from happening again.

This Union boss is so bad at optics it feels forced. Maybe the ports bribed him to make the Union look even worse?
Wrong as ever, child. Striking now is part of Trump's evil plan to crash the economy with no survivors!

I figured they'd pull this, find some connection to Trump and say it's all his great plan. If a giant asteroid was heading in they'd say Elon and Trump.. Oh nm at this rate that'll probably happen.

I mainly miss when stores were 24h. Even a ton of gas stations have stopped being 24h in recent years.

This is one of my biggest autistic gripes from the COVID era. Why did it kill 24-hour stores?

We were supposed to distance, right? There were head counts for how many people could be in a store at a time, and you had to stand outside and wait for someone to leave before you could go in. Wouldn’t it make sense, then, to have extended operating hours so people could go to the store at a wider range of times, thereby keeping the premises less crowded?

And then they did the exact opposite and limited the hours stores remained open (at least where I was living at the time) meaning more people were trying to occupy the same spaces simultaneously, making them more crowded.

None of it made any fucking sense, but that didn’t make any difference to the NPCs. Brains like goddamn cueballs.

In reality Giant Meteor will have been called down by the prayers of the suffering masses.
