"Puberty blockers" are actually gnrh agonists and used as chemotherapy for cancer patients. For adults - it's recommended that they take them 6 months. They cause bone thinning, loss of libido, genital pain and atrophy, memory loss...the list goes on. Now imagine the effects of these drugs on children who have to take them for several years (!).

And that's on fully-grown adults. The effects of them during a crucial time of growth and development (IE Puberty) has horrific, lifelong consequences.

Australia's currently the only Western nation which requires court approval for medical transition in under 18s and even that has been diluted - it's no longer required for puberty blockers, only for cross-sex hormones. We're now perilously close to that last protection being removed.

The worst thing is that I'm not sure it's true of the majority of the parents - any more than it was true of the majority of parents who bought into the Satanic Panic, lobotomy as a valid medical treatment, deep sleep therapy, or MPD. It's questionable clinicians who are leading the way on this based on dodgy science.

Sure, there are plenty who want to jump on the bandwagon and be special vicariously through their child (whether it's ADHD, autism or gender dysphoria), but there will inevitably be others who are pressured into this path and who truly believe they are acting in their child's best interests because the "experts" are telling them they're bad parents if they resist that pressure.

This started when she was 4. It's unlikely she'd even remember the kind of subtle pressure she got at that age because it tends to be based around approval and reframing things as the child's own spontaneous idea. It would likely only become apparent to Avery if Avery detransitioned at some point and her mother's reaction was negative.

Usually, these parents have to make a call. Go public/big, or go for the long game where you get years of sympathy and asspats. Make yourself too famous, and people will start questioning your story.

They are living in Richmond b.c, which is pretty much a suburb of Vancouver. Vancouver is so LGBT friendly that this kid (although he is 19) could have all the friends and advice he needs if he really was trans and his mom wasn't such a horrible person.
