In media, a recognizable name & reputation is really important. When I was starting out in NYC, a production company I temped for kept taking calls meant for someone who'd left the company. He was a largish name and had contacts at HBO so they were basically trying to poach work before anyone realized he'd moved on I guess. The last talent agency I worked for kept my email active way longer than I worked for them - until I got a lawyer involved, basically. I only knew because a casting professional texted to ask me if I got the email they sent, and I was like no I moved on.

Coates will have people kissing his ass and singing his praises until someone takes his place as like, grievance nerd of the decade. If he gets MeToo'd or something the knives will come out. But as long as he's making money and getting jobs everyone will pretend to like him.

Media is full of people who are very, very scared. A lot of it is freelancing and everyone is worried about where the next job will come from. In the film world people tend to talk about throwing off the shackles of the studio system...most professionals in that industry were better off signed to some lengthy deal with a studio where they were getting $ every week. It's a very sketchy business at the best of times. I worked mostly with actors & comics, everyone says anything literary is far bitchier and more cutthroat for less return.

That's who you get in the world of writers: people who are dumb enough to fight for crumbs at this point.
