He got weirdly attached because he thought the story was literally based off his own history and gave us the mail you a spoon rant. Probably my 2nd favourite moment from this year from Phil

First being Craig just dropping the "With all respect, go fuck yourself"
He looked like he was about to cry at the end of that game. He genuinely thought it was an allegory for his life.

next yakuza game plays like the Judgement/original yakuza franchise. no turn based shit. straight up action game. you can even do DMC air juggles now. im sure phil will still suck dick at It, but I dont blame him for playing it.

Phil's definition of JRPG is weird. As mentioned, Phil has reattributed the entire Yakuza series as JRPGs since they are Japanese and 7 was straight up turn based, and you'll never hear Phil call an action RPG made in Japan an action RPG, they are always JRPGs (or, if difficult, Soulslikes) because I guess country of origin trumps that. I've also noticed that Phil seems to drop action rpg "JRPGs" more often than turn based, especially recently with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the recent Metaphor demo coming to mind. He also hated Final Fantasy 16, which was another game that is more action RPG than JRPG despite its series lineage. But if a game is actually turn based, he seems to stick to it no matter how unpopular it is, like with Infinite Wealth and that One Piece JRPG game. I think it's one of the few genres he actually likes because they are really long and easy to play, so he can just "chill" and collect money from dents. Which makes me surprised that I don't think he has any intentions of playing the upcoming Dragon Quest 3 HD-2d remake, but that's probably too "retro" for his audience or something. His game choices have always been weird.

Yeah the Yakuza games are like Derich. Despite how much it deters everyone else, he still has weird unexplainable attachment to them that he won't admit to.

Max is a creepy faggot, I enjoy our Potato King taking shots at him.
Yeah well Max said nigger so that is kinda boss. Some would say based.
Has Phil ever said nigger? Didn't think so. Get felted, niggerdagger.

Because 90% of turn based RPGs require no skill. All he has to do is grind and make sure he has big enough numbers to mash his way through the game. Just like Champions, except there he needs a big enough wallet.

Phil is a very basic individual, all he cares about is winning, so mindless games about numbers are great for him. No wonder he gets addicted to all gacha games, they are the only games where you can pay to win and pretend you are skilled.

This is also why he dislikes Persona /Shin Megami Tensei games because they are one of the few turn based RPGs where you need a modicum of strategy and even with big numbers you might still fail if you don't use your brain (like with P5R Okumura / P3Fes Nyx).
His Persona 3 ragequit was legendary.

The only reason I'd say he doesn't fully enjoy games like Yakuza is because I think he gets fairly bored with them. There was one Yakuza where he was literally falling asleep during some of the cutscenes, and whenever he talks about the story he's usually confused, blatantly missing things, or makes the weirdest predictions. I would agree that he likes the general gameplay though because it's typically "press the attack button" which Phil can (usually) figure out. Yakuza also has the added benefit of having gambling segments, which Phil genuinely not only likes and enjoys, but outright seems excited about. I also think Phil plays up some of his Yakuza enjoyment because Khet enjoys the series. Not that I think she particularly cares what Phil thinks of the series, but I suspect Phil just parrots Khet's opinion in one of the rare instances they talk.

Max wears transitions lenses and has the face of a child sex tourist in SE Asia.
