I think it might vary based on where you grew up/where you hung out. When I was in MS/HS, my go to hangout spot was the teen area at the library and they always had a pretty even split of middle and high schoolers so I was friends with a bunch of people older and younger than me when I was a kid.
Perhaps but even in that scenario its more of a circumstantial thing. You all happen to share a common hang out area, I'm guessing in a smaller community, and from that friendships happen.
