Hurricane Milton

It’s not a nothing burger, but it’s very much something that Floridians are used to from the sounds of it. The Tornado’s being formed was freakish, but Ivan did that worse.
We don't always get hit this hard, so we're just sitting here with boredom and resentment at mother nature/the power companies/th gooberment (but we do the last one all the time) and the situation we're in. Fort Myers took around a week to two weeks to get power back the times it got smacked by Irma and Ian, so us further up on the coast and in central/upper florida are miffed we might have to wait that goddamn long. If we're lucky, they'll be faster than that. Most of what Helene hit has power now, so here's hoping.

I am NOT looking forward to all the people driving back down. The gridlock was unbelievable on Monday, the next 3 days will hopefully have a slower trickle down instead of everyone all at once. There's scant gas and no power, fuck off and stay there for a while.

Cali has earthquakes and forest fires
What makes those different is that earthquakes just all of a sudden happen unpredictably, so there's no looming dread to fret over like a hurricane or tornado. And the fires are at least something that can be dealt with, if there's enough capable manpower and proper management (which the state is severely lacking).

Anyways, glad to hear that Milton chilled out when it got to Florida. Hope the kiwis from there are all well and good.

I’ve been too busy with work to keep up on the latest news. How’s everyone doing? I hope the damage wasn't too bad.

Its looking like the Tornados were definitely the bigger killers then the storm surge. Mainly because the Tornados were not expected.
I feel like the tornado outbreak was the biggest happening of this whole event. Which makes it good that Milton ended up underperforming (at least to put it in a way) as a followup.

All states are prone to some sort of disaster. Cali has earthquakes and forest fires, the gulf has hurricanes, the plains have tornados, the great lakes region has polar vortexes, the southwest has heatwaves (which are dangerous, don't understimate them), and so on with all regions. There's no perfect place on earth where you simply won't have to deal with such events sooner or later
The entire US is a disaster prone hellhole, best to get outta there to europe

Middle Europe has surprisingly little. The worst are floods and hail.

I feel sad and I hope all the Florida men who has entertained me for years are all right.

How is Desantis handling it?

Didn't like a dozen or so people from the region die due to a flood a month or so ago?

I meant major ones like hurricanes, earthquakes, or tornadoes though.
Maybe I'm weird, but I'd take tornadoes over any other option. Jump in a concrete box once every five years and your house is probably fine 15 minutes later.

Hail is not a natural disaster. It's just angry rain and maybe an insurance claim.

The concrete box only increases your odds of survival. It does not guarantee survival. You could always have a "Twister" opening situation where the shelter doors come off (which actually almost happened to a guy during a nighttime tornado event I believe in Oklahoma two years ago – I was monitoring that situation while it was ongoing and it was one of those cellphone camera uploads that got spread around social media and I think a couple of news outlets at the time), or debris could always block off the door, requiring you to hope and wait for who knows how long for someone to notice and rescue you.

Although on the flip side, the claim's often put out there that you have a better chance of winning the lottery than you have getting directly impacted by a tornado. On a tangential note, I've been told the same odds are applicable to a power supply for a computer catching on fire, and I've personally had that happen to me at least once in this lifetime, so I tend to take these things very seriously regardless of the odds.

I meant major ones like hurricanes, earthquakes, or tornadoes though. The kind that can destroy buildings. Especially ones that are fairly routine, like annual hurricanes.

VA seems like it would be pretty chill-- not too hot, not too cold. Not a whole lot of natural threats. There does seem to be a higher concentration of lolcows generated there--but that could be a selling feature for some.

Out for coffee and you spot Chris Chan/Boogie/Wings/Bossman Jack etc. It's like a state filled with Bigfoots (Bigfeet?)

Sounds fun.

For farmers, it's their worst nightmare in many parts of the world, on par with fire. Hail causes a lot of damage to Greece's olive groves and can fuck with their economy.

Would actually recommend this for older folk who are ready to retire. Cheaper, everything is closer to you, less niggers that might randomly kill you, likely better community, less catastrophic natural disasters, etc.

Don't forget MI. It suffers through by far the most devastating natural disaster of all time, every single day. Niggers. So many niggers, you'd be praying for a fucking hurricane instead.

In Poland we don't have any disasters other than occasional flood, but this year in September we've had a historic flooding that did some very serious damage and affected the entire central Europe.

Military couldn't help as much as they should cos they are busy defending our borders. And lazy Ukrainian niggers who live in Poland didn't lift a finger to help even tho we've saved their asses.

Anyway, climate change isn't something I've been overly interested in in general but hard to deny that things are getting freaky.
