I think it's more likely Kamala's staffers were testing the waters to evaluate Brett as a moderator before they challanged Trump to the debate Fox has offered to host. Needless to say, they won't be doing that now, but her campaign really wanted to pretend Trump was scared to debate her.

Can relate to the family member having dementia thing. First of all, it sucks (to put it mildly, and to not powerlevel).
