Not Just Bikes / r/fuckcars / Urbanists / New Urbanism / Car-Free / Anti-Car - People and grifters who hate personal transport, freedom, cars, roads, suburbs, and are obsessed with city planning and urban design

They also hate cruise ships so I doubt they would take ocean going transport when they complete their Haji to Amsterdam.
It's not uncomfortable enough for their tastes. They would prefer to be stuck in the cargo hold of a containership while being fed scraps of the crew. That's the most eco friendly way of travel don't you know.

I get why they hate cruise ships. They are crowded, can spread disease, etc. Unlike public transit which is always clean and sanitary full of kind respectful people.

They also hate cruise ships
What are you talking about? They love cruise ships:

Urbanists are completely fucking insane if they think they can bring their ideas to Australia. The country is massive, mostly empty, interstate rail is next to non-existent and there is zero demand for public transport outside the major cities. This journey is like 8 or 9 hours by car on mostly straight highways with no traffic, why in God's name turn that into a three day trip?

Also why would you want to go to Canberra, it sucks there.
You're a bit off there lol, 8 hours would barely get you to Sydney, depending where you start in Melbourne, that trip is 2 day minimum by car(and the Hume is packed with trucks and the Stewart into QLD is dangerously congested for the poor condition its in), like 3-3.5 hours by plane if you exclude all the airport shit you have to put up with.

The reason the passenger trains are slow is that the corridor is old and packed with freight trains, to the point they are building 'inland rail' parallel on the west side of the great dividing range to get more capacity to meet demand for freight train paths.

Interstate rail is mainly big for tourism and great southern is launching a tourist train going the other way and continuing to Adelaide, the Mel-Syd XPT(12 hours because it gets stuck waiting for paths between freight trains) runs a day and a sleeper, both often booked out during big events like footy finals and is finally getting upgraded rolling stock and VIC's $10 a day fare cap on regional trains is causing issues because they can't keep up with demand, because they can't build new trains fast enough, and they have to upgrade the older lines with active level crossings before they can run at 100mph/160kph.

Even the grain industry is complaining there isn't enough trains and rolling stock for harvest and trucks aren't able to fill the gaps despite the roads being flooded with them to graincorp, demanding they fix it with the rail companies to the point they are reopening small janky old silos and rebuilding the switches to get trains onto them to meet demand.

Instead of celebrating the good news all the urbanist are bitching that the new rail tunnel under the city reducing travel times to the city stations by 20 mins vs changing to a tram is 'too slow' because the trains transport people from the evil suburbs and aren't just for them, unlike trams that only exist in the inner suburbs(with one exception) and that they want to ban people 'who only get on for a block to the station' from riding because they make the trams full...

Because of the inner city lefty urbanist, Melbourne doesn't have the east-west link tunnel yet.

Sorry champion but I've done the trip myself. Canberra is closer to Melbourne than Sydney is. If you follow this retard's itinerary and go to QLD first for some reason yes it would take forever but Melbourne to Canberra is an 8 hour drive with breaks.

Did anyone see the new Adam Something video? I did, I hated it.
I swear, this man just hates Elon (as if that was not already obvious).

There are criticisms to be levelled against the event, to be sure. Elon has been promising self-driving for a long time and has yet to deliver. And the robots were essentially the old Mechanical Turk for the 21st century.

And it's funny how some of his criticisms of Elon's robotaxis are also applicable to your public buses, subway systems, trams, etc.
1. "But people can be assholes on a robotaxi!"
Mr. Something asserts that the unsavory behavior of your fellow passengers can make the experience of riding a robotaxi an unpleasant one.
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
0:35 they are great for safe upper middle class neighborhoods filled with Mech manions [sic] where everyone travels in clean dry clothes there is no crime and roads are properly maintained when you get out of those areas however you immediately start having problems. What if people get on in dirty clothes and mess up the interior? What if someone throws up inside, breaks bottles, lets their pet poop on the floor and so on on

On proper mess [sic] Transit this is less of a problem you have fellow passengers around you so that is social pressure on you to behave and if you don't the driver will beat your ass
He follows this up with a totally true story about how he witnessed a fight between 2 homeless dudes (a common theme on this thread as a reason why public transit sucks) being broken up by the tram driver.

Yeah, because bad roads totally don't affect buses. And your bus driver is totally gonna refuse service to people who don't wear clean clothes, or on suspicion of them being about to puke (this also contradicts the "common transit W" of "I can be transported while drunk/publicly drinking"). And on subway systems there totally isnt just one driver for, what, i don't know, half a dozen carriages? I further suspect that people who will knowingly commit acts that will lower others' opinions of them will usually also disregard the opinions of others. Which is to say, SOCIAL PRESSURE DOESN'T WORK!

2. "But crime outside the robotaxi!"
Mr. Something asserts that the robotaxi leaves you vulnerable to criminals outside.
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
1:25 better yet you can become an easy target for robbery in rough areas rubbers can just block your taxi in a shady area Cy (pry) open the doors and take your stuff at knife point
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
6:26 luggage storage that opens to the out outside. Wait what? You want to store your luggage in a separate compartment for a city bus ride? Imagine getting off at a crowded stop and wasting everyone's time for 5 minutes as you try to dig out your bag from the bottom. Also you do realize this would be an absolute heaven for thieves and a nightmare for everyone else? What if someone grabs your luggage at a stop?
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
7:06 so I assume the compartment can just be opened once the thing stops
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
6:56 now long (distance) buses also have compartments that open to the outside but the driver usually locks them and supervises the loading and unloading
As far as I am aware, the jurisdiction of the bus driver usually ends at the doors of the bus. Sure, the bus might not get stopped, but you can still be robbed the instant you step off the bus. And the comparison to long-distance buses is somewhat invalid, due to the relatively great time between stops.

And now for some criticisms of some of his other criticisms.
3. Mr. Something asserts that the robotaxi is bad because it will not replace mass transit.
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
1:35 and there are other issues with Robo taxis like low capacity and horrible scaleability. By definition they cannot be the future of mass transit because they're not mass and can only transport a tiny fraction of what a proper Transit line could. Robo taxis are peak Elite projection basically when a bunch of Rich guys get to design public transit along their own wants and needs which usually makes it completely useless for the rest of us. Oh would you look at that? The West Coast Corporate milliona [sic] thinks public transit is when a bunch of tiny VIP business lounges slowly roll around the city! What happens when 10,000 people want to get to work in the morning?
I fail to see how this solution is worse than conventional, human-driven cars. And there's plenty of demand for transit which isn't Mass Transit. I also sense something of a strawman argument. Was it ever said that this was supposed to replace conventional mass transit?

4. Mr. Something criticizes the design of the vehicle.
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
7:22 if these strong doors operate as well as the Cyber trucks we're also looking at passengers losing fingers
Adam Something as transcribed by youtube said:
7:46 and the whole Robo sits so low that traversing any road not perfectly smooth is completely out of the question. The first medium-sized pothole would just break this thing in half
At some point he also criticizes it for not having wheelchair spaces
In theory I agree that having doors that would snap fingers or having an overly low-riding vehicle is a design flaw, but this thing isnt in full scale production yet. It's a prototype, or a technology demonstrator.

(I am in a horrible, petty mood as I write this part) The video essentially ends at 8:11 (Note that there is a sponsor break for Ground News from 2:18 to 3:51), the rest of it is just a rant against Elon in general (other than a short segment on the tesla bots from around 14:37 to 16:08). This means that he spends less than 48% of the duration of the video actually covering the stated topic. As the kids would say, just put the fries in the bag bro!
Video duration: 17:01 = 1021 seconds
Duration of relevant content: 8:11 = 491 seconds
Less 93 seconds for ads
Add 91 seconds on the tesla bots
(491 - 93 + 91) ÷ 1021 = 0.4789

haul 200lb of extra dead weight around on a bike and use the backstraps as a bike seat, I'm not sure why nobody else does this

-Bucks smell. Especially during the rut (this is probably pre rut judging by the time of year) and especially once you open up the organ cavity. Gutting the deer removes some of it, but a lot of the deer stink remains in their hide and won't go away until that's gone.
-They also shed a lot when you handle their carcass. Getting this intimate with one is going to put deer hair and stink in places you can't even imagine.
-The head and front legs being tied to the handlebars can't make steering easy.
-At least I hope the head is secured in some way. Having that thing flopping left to right during the whole ride can't be pleasant.
-Imagine having to straddle a deer's torso just to pedal.
-Maybe this guy is lucky and got a deer only a mile or two from his house, but most people are not so fortunate. Think of having to take a 20 mile ride through dirt trails to get out of the backcountry like this. I can't imagine riding that much further than a mile before getting sick of this charade and putting it on a real vehicle.

They are the same reason the eastern ends where it does, either way east-west link is a meme project, and the retarded option compared to completing the ring road, trucks sure as fuck don't want another route through the city when they can bypass it via the ring road lol

Dude he's going to Cairns not Canberra in that screenshot...
If you look at it closer you'll see even the drive is at least 30 hours without stops...
