There's some funny lore to this.

The reason they use "incel" as an insult is they liked calling people who disagreed with them loser virgins. "Gamers" were bad nerd shut ins ("gamers are dead" "gamers don't have to be your audience") while the new, progressive audience was "players". There is no compliance or lack of compliance that would have made a difference. If people were quiet it would be taken as tacit approval. When people spoke up they were called every ist and phobe. Their agenda would have moved forward anyway.

I think its worth noting, plenty of people had gone through the whole

"oh this game looks neat"
