Haven't looked at this thread in a long time. It's a shame that there's not many posts talking about the game itself. Overall, I really enjoyed Shadow Gens. It's probably my new favourite entry in the series after 13 years. The lack of budget is pretty obvious though, the only reason that Chaos Island is in the game rather than a stage from Shadow '05 was so that they could recycle some assets. Despite that though, I don't think there's a single bad stage or side-challenge in the game and even though it's unlikly that Shadow will keep any of his Doom Powers because when has consistancy ever mattered in this franchise, I would like to see another game with him playable in the future, maybe in Frontiers 2 (Though probably not as the staring role)
Like Sonic Gens though, I do wish that S-Ranks presented more of a challenge. Metal Overlord and his Hard Mode varient are by far the hardest S-Ranks in the game, requiring me to play near perfectly but it was never frustrating, despite the fact that I played it so many times that I have the dialogue memorised by heart. Radical Highway without Doom Wing was also great fun to S-Rank.
As for Flynn, I do not think that he is an inherently bad writier for the series. I've not read any of Archie or IDW but I think most of the writing in Shadow Gens and Dark Beginnings is perfectly fine but I do think that he has a problem of being too verbose. and this is one of the contributing factors as to why many of the voice performances in Sonic Gens come off as unnatural. To my knowledge, the Japanese script for the game was left almost entirely unchanged, this is why the majority of the cutscenes were not reanimated but it seems as though Flynn wrote the dialogue under the impression that they would be reanimated to the new dialogue (and frankly, I can't blame him for that assumption. Why else would they hire him to change it?)
Ultimatly though, I think most of the examples of Flynn's changes are harmless. I've only witnessed the same couple of more agregious examples reposted over and over, such as with Knuckles' island and the Time Stones. I think he mostly formed his reputation for excessive referencing in Frontiers, especially the infamous
"These ruins look just like the ones on Angel Island"

But given how vocal people have been about it (there's no way that he didn't see the shitposts on Twitter pre-launch), I hope that he learns to reign himself in a bit. The changes in dialogue do not make the game with an already barebones story unplayable, Sonic x Shadow is a perfectly fine substitue for the original.
