Haven't looked at this thread in a long time. It's a shame that there's not many posts talking about the game itself. Overall, I really enjoyed Shadow Gens. It's probably my new favourite entry in the series after 13 years. The lack of budget is pretty obvious though, the only reason that Chaos Island is in the game rather than a stage from Shadow '05 was so that they could recycle some assets. Despite that though, I don't think there's a single bad stage or side-challenge in the game and even though it's unlikly that Shadow will keep any of his Doom Powers because when has consistancy ever mattered in this franchise, I would like to see another game with him playable in the future, maybe in Frontiers 2 (Though probably not as the staring role)

Like Sonic Gens though, I do wish that S-Ranks presented more of a challenge. Metal Overlord and his Hard Mode varient are by far the hardest S-Ranks in the game, requiring me to play near perfectly but it was never frustrating, despite the fact that I played it so many times that I have the dialogue memorised by heart. Radical Highway without Doom Wing was also great fun to S-Rank.

As for Flynn, I do not think that he is an inherently bad writier for the series. I've not read any of Archie or IDW but I think most of the writing in Shadow Gens and Dark Beginnings is perfectly fine but I do think that he has a problem of being too verbose. and this is one of the contributing factors as to why many of the voice performances in Sonic Gens come off as unnatural. To my knowledge, the Japanese script for the game was left almost entirely unchanged, this is why the majority of the cutscenes were not reanimated but it seems as though Flynn wrote the dialogue under the impression that they would be reanimated to the new dialogue (and frankly, I can't blame him for that assumption. Why else would they hire him to change it?)

Ultimatly though, I think most of the examples of Flynn's changes are harmless. I've only witnessed the same couple of more agregious examples reposted over and over, such as with Knuckles' island and the Time Stones. I think he mostly formed his reputation for excessive referencing in Frontiers, especially the infamous

"These ruins look just like the ones on Angel Island"
*Sepia filter screenshot of Sonic 3 & Knuckles flashes on screen*

But given how vocal people have been about it (there's no way that he didn't see the shitposts on Twitter pre-launch), I hope that he learns to reign himself in a bit. The changes in dialogue do not make the game with an already barebones story unplayable, Sonic x Shadow is a perfectly fine substitue for the original.

Bro, the first video on Sqrly point-blank says that Sqrly's schizo enough to punch his ex's pet bird, beat himself up cuz the delusion of being Bunnie was fading for a bit, and locking himself in a closet. What part of that says "shitposter" to you?
Re-read the post please. Most people will only ever know of him via his commie artworks and assume they're the products of either a politisperg or a troll.

I was bored and took a look at the newer comics. Has anything really changed? All these stories are about weird, sexually charged OCs implied to be spending some good quality time together. And sometimes they fight robots.
Nope. Latest issue was about the usual. Only thing of note is how much of a nobody the antagonist of this arc is.

IDW's sonic isn't an atrocity, but it is a major bore. I can see why Sega execs would sign off on it, it's inoffensive and doesn't hurt the brand anymore than usual. They don't seem to care really. And why should they? Sonic has two successful films now with a third, and highly anticipated addition in production. Flynn and his comic are so obscure that his unprofessional behavior means nihl in the popular conscious. Ironically, Penders gets more press then Flynn, and he hasn't written for Sonic in almost two decades now.

I’m going to be honest, while I’ve enjoyed a lot of Shadow Generations, I’ve been pretty let down by the game as well. It really feels like they blew their load with what was marketed as everything that wasn’t heavily promoted has been extremely lackluster. The Act 2 stages have all been pretty bad, but I think Kingdom Valley’s Act 2 is especially bad. It’s incredibly linear and consists of mainly boring platforming much like a Forces level, except that it drags on for 3-4 minutes unlike a Forces level. The only spectacle comes from a bunch of jarring camera shifts that feel more nauseating than exciting. The music in that level isn’t that great either. I really don’t get how Sonic fans think this is better than the base Sonic Generations. Really feels like insane recency bias to me.

Because it controls very well and is actually responsive. The 2d sections in Sonic Generations are less enjoyable than pancreatic cancer.

Look, they might not be genesis perfect, but they are 1000x better than whatever the fuck sonic 4 was doing.
Of course, I'll never dispute that. Sonic 4 was terrible. But Sonic Generations 2D pales in comparison to Shadow Generations 2D. Not least because the Shadow ones actually feel like 2D movement, and you never accidentally jump towards the camera and lose momentum as you slam into the invisible wall which is trapping you in a narrow path on a 3D plane, that's the problem with SGenerations, it just feels wrong and all kinds of fucked up.

It's apathy like that which almost got the site nuked from orbit. People didn't think Dong Gone could succeed, but he came close. I still remember the dark days when it looked like he, Keffals, and their ilk had carte blanche to blackmail people into silence cuz "They took down Kiwi Farms!"

Backnon topic, you guys need to take a look at the Bluesky accounts of the IDW Sonic staff. It's gonna pop off in lols in a few days, assuming a certain Cheeto wins.
Send screenshots lmao

"IAN FLYNN ADDED PLOT TO SONIC GENERATIONS, NOMORE CRINGE DIALOGUE GUYS!"
I fucking wish the rewrites were anything lke the memes people making fun of his tendencies to do callbacks to stuff he didn't write was the case, already went over that. The praise I've seen online for this game compared tot he og release either seems to be unfounded bullshit/ass kissing lies/intentional ignorance or just the actual GOOD reasons to praise like the new shadow mode being good and the port not being broken like the colors remaster ports were. Guess which side seems more vocal? I mean I don't think you need to guess because it's already kind of been discussed lmao.

How would you rank the Shadow Gens stages? For me it's:
Radical Highway Act 1 > Kingdom Valley Act 1 > Chaos Island Act 1 > Radical Highway Act 2 > Space Colony Ark 1 > Chaos Island 2 > Devil Doom > Sunset Heights 2 > Mephiles > Metal Overlord > Rail Canyon 1 > Kingdom Valley 2 > Space Colony Ark 2 > Biolizard > Sunset Heights 1 > Rail Canyon 2
Then overall including Sonic it'd probabaly be:
Rooftop Run 2 > Radical Highway 1 > Seaside Hill 2 > City Escape 2 > Kingdom Valley 1 > Chaos Island 1 > Radical Highway 2 > Space Colony Ark 1 > Speed Highway 2 > Chaos Island 2 > Devil Doom > Sunset Heights 2 > Mephiles > Metal Overlord > Rail Canyon 1 > Rooftop Run 1 > Egg Dragoon > Silver > Speed Highway 1 > Chemical Plant 2 > Shadow > Space Colony Ark 2 > Sky Sanctuary 2 > Rail Canyon 1 > City Escape 1 > Crisis City 1 > Kingdom Valley 2 > Metal > Biolizard > Crisis City 2 > Chemical Plant 1 > Seaside Hill 1 > Green Hill 1 > Sunset Heights 1 > Sky Sanctuary 1 > Green Hill 2 > Rail Canyon 2 > Wisp 2 > Wisp 1 > Time Eater
