A rescued pet squirrel that sat atop a social media and charity empire has been seized by New York state — with its owner saying it’s slated to be euthanized, according to an Instagram post.

Peanut the Squirrel was taken from his Elmira, NY, home Wednesday by officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation, who served a warrant to Peanut’s guardians after receiving complaints of “unlawfully possessed” animals, according to the post.

“Well internet, you WON,” the caption from account Peanut_The_Squirrel12 reads. “You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness. To the group of people who called DEC, there’s a special place in hell for you.”

A DEC spokesperson confirmed to The Post that officers took away Peanut the Squirrel and a pet raccoon.

The squirrel’s owner, Mark Longo, claimed that he was in “shock” and “disbelief” that DEC was going to allegedly euthanize his pet and friend, according to the social media post.

The DEC said that the animals were seized in coordination with Chemung County Health department “due to the presence of a rabis vector species (raccoon) in the home.”

The state agency did not comment on whether the animals will be euthanized.

Longo took in Peanut seven years ago, when he was just a kit, after seeing its mother get hit by a car, according to social media accounts.

Peanut boasts 532,000 followers on Instagram, more than 423,000 followers on Facebook, and over 2 million views on TikTok.

Longo, a Connecticut native, moved to Elmira in 2023 to start an animal sanctuary named P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, a 501.C.3 approved nonprofit.

“Last year we moved to NY in hopes of starting a NONPROFIT animal rescue in PNUT’s Name. [P’Nuts Freedom Farm] will forever live in PNUT’s memory,” Longo wrote in the post announcing Peanut’s seizure.

“With over 350 rescues, we’ve relied heavily on PNUT and his internet family to father donations to help more animals. I don’t even know how will [sic] continue to fundraise for this nonprofit.”

P’Nut’s Freedom Farm is an organization made up of veterinarians and caregivers who are dedicated to rescuing animals from abusive or dire situations, according to the group’s website.

Following the announcement of Peanut’s capture, Longo posted several phone numbers for the Department of Environmental Conservation onto his feed – asking supporters to call in protest against the government’s actions.

There is also a petition to return Peanut to his rightful home.

This is not the first time the DEC is in public relations hot water over confiscating a beloved pet.

Earlier this year, the department confiscated a 750-pound alligator from a Hamburg, NY, home, which was outfitted with a massive room and pool for the reptile’s comfort.

“Albert” the alligator had lived in his home for 34 years and was raised from a hatchling by guardian Tony Cavallaro, who is now suing the department to regain custody of his longtime friend.

If I was ever on a court case for a man who gunned down cops to save their pet, I would vote him not guilty on the grounds that those assholes deserved it.

What a shameful society we live in where people are allowed to form locust swarms of thieves who run around stripping everything in a store bare for their own greed, yet the full long arm of the law is here to beat down your family for rescuing an orphaned baby squirrel just so they can put it to death. Showing compassion is the crime.

I'm sure that the snitch thought she was saving Peanut; the wildlife glowies are dead-eyed abominations who felt nothing.

And I wish the tiktok/instagram fags had archived the landwhale's accounts properly. She's locked up all her shit, even her shitty photography website and I had to use Yandex to even find it. I'm always baffled that they never archive anything.
Her name, location and other things are leaked out. The fact she DFE'd just confirms it was her. Monica Keasler is a fat narc.

EDIT: just fyi i put Monica Keasler into bing and it brings up the articles about the squirrel

Pets are essentially family members, so it must feel absolutely awful to have them taken away by some government kike with you unable to do anything about it.
There's the similar event last year in which FWC officers (another shitty and corrupt organization) killed several legally-owned snakes, including a pregnant Boa constrictor, because they mistakenly thought they were illegal pythons. Government Wildlife employees are all powertripping assholes who deserve the rope.

Never let that oxygen thief/blubber hoarder forget her disgraceful behavior
What goes around comes around. Am sure she's being viciously doxxed. Very likely any of the 'law enforcement personnel' who participated in this shitshow are also being viciously doxxed.

That squirrel wasn't bothering anyone, and the fucks that took him away knew there was no way to test for rabies without killing the squirrel and examining its' brain.

While I hate that this happened, I believe the squirrel would still be living if the owners were whoring it out online for fame and money.
Or you know, go somewhere where there is less of a chance to be caught breaking the law. But nope, they had to have it both ways like children who don’t want to listen.

This reminds me of a stupid situation involving the laws in my state and my uncle's dachshund puppy. Puppy got spooked because he didn't hear my mom come up to pet him and he chomped my mom's forearm. No big deal, couple tooth marks. No one is going to die. Fast forward 4 days later and it developed a minor staph infection that wasn't likely to heal with just OTC topical antibiotic, so I took my mom to the local urgent care to get it looked at and the doc agreed it was just a simple staph infection and gave her an Rx for amoxicillin (this was a long time ago, back when Doc's still did paper Rx)

He asks what kind of dog it was and we tell him, and he's writing stuff down. We ask him why it matters, and he said he had to report it by law to the "vicious dog registry" so if the puppy does it again, they will seize and euthanize it for being a danger to the public. My mother and I exchange horrified glances, and he asks who owns it, etc... and we both suddenly develop a severe case of hysterical amnesia and can't remember any details of the situation. The doctor clearly didn't believe us and said that we had to tell him, it was required by law. We told him there is nothing we can do about having hysterical amnesia, it was so traumatic we blocked it out. So he decides to try and threaten my mother with "Well, if you don't know the dog, we will have to do a mandatory rabies prophylaxis" For those that don't know, the modern protocol for that is still very unpleasant and not completely without risk.

As a side note, on the one branch of my family, we have a kind of "berserker" mode that will activate if someone really manages to corner or threaten one of us. In this state of mind, there is no discussion to be had. The other party either complies, or things get really dire. As soon as this guy makes the implied threat of necessary prophylaxis, he triggers my B mode. I move at lightspeed from one side of the room to the other about an inch from this doctor's face and basically say "Look at my face!! This is the face of someone who will do things to you that would make Satan himself turn away in horror if you even think of harming my mother!!! Now, we will be leaving!!!" He didn't say a word and just left the room. We left the room, finished the checkout and left. We never heard another thing about it.

Many states have stupid laws like this. It drives me insane. 0 tolerance means 0 use of brains.

I'm torn.

On one hand, sad the squirrel is dead.

On the other, the guy was dragging his feet on getting his permit updated, and has been working pretty hard to try and monetize the squirrel before and after this happened.

I'm also strongly inclined to distrust unlicensed wildlife sanctuary types, there's been too many horror stories of retards calling themselves wildlife sanctuaries and just using it as an excuse to keep pet foxes or similar animals, or treat animals like shit even if they could make things look nice on video.

If this really is as the owner said and is just a tragic case of being behind on loicenses and such, I feel awful for him. If there's more to it, I probably still feel bad for him, but get the feeling that it was more self imposed than expected.

You'll only get a prion disease from a deer if you eat said deer. You want to outlaw hunting too while you are at it?

To the best of my knowledge the de novo prion disorder that appears in deer, known as Chronic Wasting Disease, has not been proven to be transmitted to humans . The only known cases of human prion disease contracted from deer was when deer contracted the prion disease known as Scrapie from a herd of sheep that had it.

"Oi, m9! Do you have a LOISCENE to own that animal!"

I have actually said this to friends and family several times being semi-serious. The white ducks you see, known as the American Pekin (which has a very interesting history of how they came to America and became established in ponds across the US, check it out) is not a native species and you can actually just take it home if you want and keep it as a pet (subject to local laws, of course).

Im torn.

Guy raised the squirrel and shit.

But at the end of the day its just a squirrel. I don't know how many i killed to get rid of them from my property.
Trust me, I'm not a super tree huggy person, and I've shot my share of chipmunks too, BUT, the catalyst in this is it was a PET which was TAMED for 7 years without incident. Had this been a random fucking squirrel, I'd dumb rate this article into the ground, but this is just cruel and pointless.

We might get caught up in the minutae of whether squirrels are pests or not (they are an enemy to my garden), but the real issue is that the government decided to let itself into a man's house on a spurious rumor, rummage through his belongings while holding him in custody for hours, and then executed his pet based on the 'law'.

This above is enough of a plot that could get a John Wick movie made.

I noticed a rather large squirrel going back and forth across my back yard this afternoon, probably stockpiling acorns in his hidey hole. It made me a bit bummed out because it reminded me of this bullshit but at least he's not in danger of some fucking hambeast siccing the government on him. The dangers he faces are at least comprehensible to him.
