Personally, I’ve only ever watched the anime all the way through. While it still has a lot of creepy moments from the manga, at least the anime has the decency to tone it down a couple notches.
The manga on the other hand, I ended up dropping half way through because I couldn’t take the creepiness anymore. As you said, it’s impossible to separate art from the artist in the context of the manga.
Seeing the page where he described what Nanachi’s butthole smells like what the final straw for me. Normally I drop a series a lot quicker than that, but was only pulled in by the story.
To be honest, it’d be an easy 10/10 if not for the creepy fetishes and pedophilia.

The difference between now and then, as far as importation goes, is that this type of shit used to get filtered out or censored.

Even Cardcaptor Sakura has an arc in the Japanese one where her 11-13yo friend has a relationship with the teacher. It's just cut in the Western dub. I think they reuse a handful of scenes in a total different context but yeah.

But then early Roshi is pretty bad. Early DB is still great but it does make it a little difficult to reccomend (its great! Just ignore <all this pervy stuff>, it calms down after the first arc! Uh... Mostly...)

It was toned down in the anime compared to the manga, but yes, the dub had to rework it. They even had to change Sakura's mother's age to be a "college" student instead of 16 because a college student marrying her teacher has no other implications to it whatsoever lmao.
On the flipside of the dub coin when it comes to aging up characters to hide uncomfortable truths, the dub for Tamers accidentally implied Rika's mother had her at 15 instead of 18 because they aged up the kids in the script.
