I personally find it very hard to believe that the State of CA has lost an entire YEAR'S worth of marriage and divorce records and nobody noticed until now.

I think it far more likely that Greta never bothered to get a proper divorce from that particular individual, and Nina has as a result never been able to get her papers in order. This admission about the 'missing divorce' also casts some dubiety on how they managed to get their papers in order enough to legally GET married in the first place, since normally a full record of all previous marriages and divorces are required to be produced to confirm parties are free to marry.

Wednesday Dec 28th, the the Border Patrol in Arizona stopped the Trans Lifeline van as it was heading from California to Chicago. Despite her being married to a US citizen and showing her marriage certificate, border police detained Nina, and took her to a local station in Wellton, Arizona.
After being held for 48 hours, they’ve transferred her to an ICE facility in Eloy, Arizona with a history of human rights abuses towards trans women. A former transgender inmate, Marichuy Leal Gamino, was raped in custody at the Eloy ICE facility. When she reported the abuse but the staff instead tried to cover up the attack by pressuring Marichuy to sign a statement that the rape was consensual. A google search reveals a number of troubling cases involving sexual violence and guard misconduct.
We need you to help #FreeNina! Write a letter demanding that we free her now or move her to Santa Ana which has a better human right record. Sample letter:

I am _____ and I am writing to express my concern about the continued detention of Nina Chaubal, DOB 9/15/1991. Nina didn't transition before leaving India, so claiming persecution on the grounds of being trans isn't going to fly.

Idk how hard the US system is on asylum claims, but my experience in the UK is that even cases of documented torture will not always - in fact, frequently won't - get you across the line to a successful asylum claim. "muh genduh dysphoria, MUH INNUR TORMENT" is absolutely 100% not going to cut it.
