Greta is definitely predatory, but Nina is calculating. If US residency is off the table, what use is Greta to her.

Long before she ever met Greta, Nina was planning to stay in the US and not return to India. This isn't a case of "I was studying in the US, fell in love and decided to stay".

Nina still has a lot of options. Greta has few. Greta's in her late 40s with no formal qualifications. She's only going to be a millstone around Nina's neck as she gets older and at some point Nina will be looking at supporting them both for decades.

I don't know anything about Canadian immigration, but I can tell you it's harder than hell to move between Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The only reason it still happens a lot is the number of people with provable direct family connections. Many Western nations (very much including the US) have actively discouraged legal immigration from the "usual" countries in favor of exotics.
