Simply put, the public is not educated enough on what kind of tells they need to look for. It seems everyone is disappointed with the fact hes getting 30 years rather then execution. This basically is a life sentence unless he gets some type of sweetheart parole deal. But with Trump and republicans taking both houses of congress, we might finally get federal capital punishment on the menu for these acts. Florida did it, and without too many challenges from the judiciary as of yet. Though we may have to wait for some type of appeal result when an execution date comes near for one of those guys. If I remember correctly there's a state in the USA which still uses firing squads for executions.

It's a few states, at least in theory. Idaho, Utah, Oklahoma, and Mississippi all have the firing squad allowed as a secondary method of execution, meaning that it  can legally be used.
