Yes. He is smart enough to know that his side is losing badly, but not smart enough to know, that the middle position is unacceptable to both sides, and by occupying that position he becomes a villain twice.
If he was just a little bit better at thinking, he would delete his twitter profile and enjoy his porsches and life with his closeted gay husband.
The reason he doesn't just fuck off and play pinball and video games with Frank for the rest of his life is simple: it's just not enough for John to be content living life on easy mode, he has a terminal case of main character syndrome and a need to be the center of attention. It's a pattern that has repeated throughout his life. First he wanted to be a star animator, then he wanted to be the journalist that would take down Bush, then the best iOS video game developer, then the most persecuted "woman" in tech, then the most awesome US representative replacing an obsolete white man, then the top Democrat political analyst and fundraiser, and now the smartest and best tranny in the world.
If John had even an iota of common sense, he'd realize that he honestly has about the best life he could have hoped for. After getting his rich family to cut him off through his shitty behavior, he only had to live in relative poverty for about a year before he met Frank, who for whatever reason decided to marry this gormless fuck and cater to his every whim, seemingly no questions asked. He could live out the rest of his days in obscurity leeching off of his much more successful husband and never have to lift a finger until the day he (or Frank) died.
But that just wouldn't satisfy the pervasive narcissism that has ruled his entire life. In John's mind, if he's not famous, he might as well not even exist. So he keeps throwing himself headlong into one venture after another, only for it to all fall apart because he's just too incompetent to put in the effort. The based tranny arc will just be another failed identity to add to the pile soon enough.
This is a great find.
Its interesting that the current version of Wu claims the following were all formative events in his life. However, there is no mention.
No mention of a trip to rehab.
No mention of an eating disorder.
No mention of using "every drug in the book" (only ambien)
No mention of being disowned by his family.
No mention of being homeless.
No mention of suicide or suicidality.
No mention of the Barbie dolls.
I did laugh at him claiming to run 45 miles a weeek. Some bullshit stories never change.
Some of these are mentioned elsewhere;
this Susan's Place post discusses his laughable rehab story, other parts having to be pieced together elsewhere. He claims
in his intro to have been brutally mugged in 2002 "2 weeks after we invaded Iraq," which astute minds will realize doesn't add up since the Iraq War began in 2003. From this, he was allegedly beaten up so bad that it was thought he'd never regain full function, and during this stint in rehab he renounced Christianity and conservatism as super bad and wrong and that his problems were due to being a closeted transsexual. It would still take several years before he finally decided to act on these impulses.
You'll also have to note the time that this was posted: July 17, 2006. This was just before he was forced to leave Ole Miss for the last time, which is presumably at the same time he was having his fallout with his family refusing to put up with his nonsense any longer. His "disowning" and "homelessness" wouldn't occur for about another month or two.
I'm doing my best to comb through as much of this stuff as possible to piece together the truth behind John's fabrications. In his
Women in Tech contribution, he claims to have nearly drowned while boating down a river after Socially Unconscious failed (he claims it was when he was 21, but this would have been in 2000 when he was 23; John had a habit of lying about his age for years, though). Yet there's no mention of this supposedly life-changing event anywhere else that I can find. I guess that's just what happens when you're documenting a pathological liar. I would love nothing more than to get an interview with his family to try and put together a picture of his early life, but I'm sure they still want nothing to do with him.
