This is a law SPECIFICALLY for "people with no good reputation to protect", usually referring to: criminals, I don't think parents who had kids that died from a mass shooting fall under this.

There's no legal argument to sue a guy for taking part in an ongoing public debate, on issues of national import.

That's the big difference here, you and I will very unlikely ever be sued if we made false statements about a person, because there's no way nobodies like us would plausibly "cause reputational damage" enough to actually affect that person in a negative way, but Alex Jones is not a nobody, he's in all intents and purposes, a public figure with an audience that people listen to, that's how we was successfully sued.

Earlier, I criticized mainstream media for also broadcasting false statements, that's a thing they do, and in some cases, they were sued for defamation because of it (see: Covington Kids), and we can shit on the US federal government all we want, we have a LONG list of grievances built up for decades with them.

You might find this hard to believe, but a person can both simultaneously think our government and media have done a lot of pretty disgusting things that I can't even know where to begin, and also not have to defend Alex Jones defaming multiple people, most people don't fall under hard bootlickers and free speech absolutists, there's actually more moderate positions in between those extremes.
