It's clear to me that the North American console game industry collapsed in the mid 2010s or thereabouts, maybe starting with Mass Effect 3 and its shitshow of an ending. ET was released in 1983 and the North American video game industry didn't recover until either Tomb Raider or GTA 3 came out. It's just that nobody aside from Gamergate noticed because everybody was playing Japanese and European games anyway. "Oh cool Nintendo Switch". "Oh cool Cyberpunk 2077 got a new update". "I fucking love Baldur's Gate 3!"

That's nonsense. You can argue that North America's creative output didn't exactly dominate certain console generations, but US devs were always a very strong and influential presence on home computers. I mean, fucking Doom came out in '93 and you're telling me the 'murricans didn't get their shit together until '96? Come on.

Neither Tomb Raider nor GTA 3 were developed in North America, by the way.

Oh right, the Brits made them. So it's worse than I thought.

Honestly, though, what really prominent North American video games can you remember from that period aside from Doom I guess? I guess I should have been specific and zeroed in on console games.

Edit posted this, but I should have zeroed in on console games, PC was still definitely a good time for North America, but console gaming failed.

"Aside from Citizen Kane, what great movies did Orson Welles make, really?"

That's more reasonable, I guess, but I honestly never perceived the US video game industry as particularly weak at any point prior to, you know, the Current Years. But lets drop it. We agree that all the major North American video game devs have slowly but surely turned into turd factories.

Off the top of my head? Quake, Arena and Daggerfall, WarCraft I & 2, Command and Conquer, various Star Wars games, Civilization 2, Sim City 2000, Rollercoaster Tycoon.

And that's just up to and including 1996.

The most popular mod for the game currently is one that removes the "stupid purple". Not even the mods are safe from The Discourse™

That's fucking retarded.
Everything introduced after Origins is pretty retarded lore-wise. I'm going to pretend like everything ends after Witch Hunt when I complete it. World is more cohesive and less knife-eared vine swinger centric.

they setup demons, dragons, and gods with Flemeth's dragon morphing self being a super abomination that Morrigan is sure will come back even if you kill her and the entire thing with the god child
but she was possessed by an elf god the entire time

Obsidian hasn't made a good game in over a decad
PoE2 and Tyranny had unique premises and interesting ideas that didn't quite hit due to budget issues.
Grounded wasn't an RPG but it was a massive critical and financial success.
Obsidian made Outer Worlds, which sends the unfathomably based message that people selected for intelligence are vital for a society's survival
I actually enjoyed Outer Worlds despite its woke tropes. It's an inferior version of New Vegas but still comes together.
