I don't want to get dark but think about it. Nick's ideal life is fucking random holes and doing drugs hourly and it's not a stretch to imagine Nick is projecting this ideal life onto his favorite kid. I was a huge naysayer on something like this but with how badly rackets spiraled..... well look innocent until proven guilty but if it does end up being the case I won't be very surprised

Anytime someone says "spiraled" I can't help but just think that it's not really a spiral. It's just who they are. This person right here is who Nick is and who Nick has always been. The only difference is that now he is too busy/stressed/whatever to put up a facade of being anything different. "Normal people" don't spiral. You don't see this type of shit happen to your average person. You only see this type of thing happen to people who have massive issues and are, for one reason or another, putting on a public face of being normal. Then later you suddenly discover that the person who "spiraled" was actually fucked up the whole time and nobody noticed. It's like this with the sudden suicide people who "were so happy nobody could have imagined" or the "quiet guy next door who suddenly kills someone" etc etc etc etc. It's why all these "normal kids" who become school shooters always have these completely insane journals they keep. Nick is no different. He's just a sexual and moral deviant who doesn't have the ability to fake it anymore. He isn't spiraling at all, he is just allowing himself to be free of the burden of pretending to be normal.

The cracks have been there for a while honestly. He's been dropping hints about being the grift king, slowly slipping alcohol in, "joking" about sexual deviant stuff, and "joking" about his batshit views on Christianity for years. He just slowly wanted to merge those lives (the lives of being fucked up and the life of being a successful family man Christian lawyer). Guess he didn't realize that the wild ride always ends the same fuckin way.
