Treadmill workout works for injured kiwi bird

September 13, 2015

An injured kiwi who has been training on a tiny purpose-built treadmill has been passed as fit and ready to return to New Zealand's wild.
Ruata was caught in a trap in June and his lower leg joint was repaired by vets.

Injured Kiwi 'Ruata' is nursed back to health by staff at Rainbow Springs' Kiwi Encounter in New Zealand.
He had intensive rehabilitation for eight week at the Wildlife Centre at Massey University in Palmerston North and is now being looked after by Kiwi Encounter at a wildlife centre in Rotorua.
Video of him strengthening his leg on the tiny treadmill at Massey has made it on to international websites.

On Saturday Ruata underwent a health check and is now in quarantine leading up to his release, in about three weeks, back to the wild, says Kiwi Encounter kiwi husbandry manager Claire Travers.
"We've been keeping a careful eye on his progress, watching how he moves and forages for food and we're confident that he can now survive back in the wild," Ms Travers says.
