Anyone know of the game Webfishing? It's a game that mixes online co-op with fishing. It ain't made by a trans person but it does exude strong doses of "so retro", so it's no wonder why it's been blowing up recently. It's free on itch.io as it was apart of a Game Jam (made in 8 days apparently) before it got rehauled to Steam, now costing $5.

What do y'all personally think of it, though?

Does seem like a pretty harmless game. But I know with the "so retro" aesthetics and the fact you can customize your character to your liking, I know it's gonna be ripe with that certain crowd. Getting lots of Animal Crossing vibes from these, too—and I don't mean that in a good way.

Personal theory is because of some shitty fishing minigame "meme" that was kind of popular among indie dev/player types. It's the quirky "oh yeah I'm killing all these people, but I'm gonna do this out of character relaxing thing LOL!" joke.

It's exactly what happened to Yakuza, people who've never played the games will casually watch lets plays or whatever and only take away the quirky haha funny moments and activities while also completely ignoring the more serious and arguably interesting parts of the main stories. This is why we get people who do the "my scrungly uwu bean" shit with characters from mature games, they either pick a certain personality trait or quirk of them and run with it, or just make shit up entirely to fit within their mentally ill view of the world.

Yakuza needs both halves to function. Seeing it become “the Baka Mitai game” has been incredibly frustrating, as is the terrible new Amazon series where they dropped the fun side entirely because the writers were on Witcher levels of “we never actually played it, why would we”.

It's 110% what the other guy said about fishing mini games becoming a sort of meme.
It started of with (actual genuine) women saying they like that sort of stuff in games like starslop valley and the like.
Then of course troons saw that and hooked into it because they wanna be quirky pickme alternative "not like the other girls" egirls too.

Can confidently say so because the more casual gaming (actual) women I know have always liked minigames and side activities to do in more sandboxy games. Then I saw it become a meme and only then did I start to see trannies grab onto it with the same deathgrip they use while indulging in their AGP.

Somewhat related, but I once saw a screenshot of some popular fandom page (don’t know what series/show it was) showing a poll they put out. It asked something along the lines of “Fandom participants, have you ever actually watched this show?”

Something like 60% of respondents said no. The memes about tourists infecting fanbases for the purpose of making it their own community is unfortunately more prominent than it used to be.
