Not Just Bikes / r/fuckcars / Urbanists / New Urbanism / Car-Free / Anti-Car - People and grifters who hate personal transport, freedom, cars, roads, suburbs, and are obsessed with city planning and urban design

Sure, that bike lane may be used. Maybe it's really damn well used.

But I've seen any number of roads with two or more lanes in each direction - how many bike lanes have been seen that wide? Even if you count a normal width lane as "two abreast" I've never seen a triple.
I can't wait to see the cognitive dissonance on display when urbanists try to argue why they need a second bike lane adjacent to the first, but still mock "one more lane" for cars.

You may have noticed that this does not look like a Reddit post. This is because it isn't; it's from the pit of woke groupthink known as the Lawyers Guns Money blog, and in particular the post "Crushing NIMBYism is critical to the future of American democracy". That site has more material for the SJWs thread than most of modern Twitter.

What's the point of living in a tiny apartment in a dense city if you're 45 minutes away from "museums, parks, art galleries, zoos, botanical gardens and concert/sports/performance venues". I live deep in the suburbs and it would take me a lot less time than that to drive to any of those things.

It's interesting how they view the world even more as a black and white caricature than what they claim their opponents do. In reality most people don't really give a shit how you live, unless you start trying to change how they live (which they advocate for frequently). No one is calling him "un-American" except the strawman in his head. It's a type of persecution fetish where he wants to believe that someone cares this much about his life decisions that they're offended by him.

TBH it starts to make a lot of sense why they talk the way they do when you think about it from this perspective. Mostly on this thread we're critical of the policies and actions they're trying to push to make it difficult to own your own home and vehicle. Yet, in their heads they think to themselves, "oh why are those mean old chuds after me and my poor cargo bike for no reason at all". They don't even properly comprehend the reason behind why people don't like them.

It's kind of like saying you're vegan and then start talking about passing laws to make it prohibitively expensive or difficult to eat meat and then complaining that people are only critical toward your statements because you're vegan.

He lives in New York City. You can tell because he used the word “super” (short for “superintendent”) to refer to his landlord.
I had to read that twice to make sure it wasn't sarcasm. Also "call the landlord for broken shit" is going to be useless if they take three business days to respond.

For what it's worth, there's a Home Depot in Manhattan (does mostly contractor work and carries almost no lumber for obvious reasons), so there's no excuse not to just run out and buy a drain snake and/or a bottle of Drano yourself.

A town near me is considering a similar dumb idea, no roundabouts though. I talk sometimes with guys who own businesses who talk to the business owners who would be impacted. They've all tried to convince the city it's a stupid idea. It's been scaled back so it doesn't even fix the actual problems in the area. The business owners have simply given up, there is nothing they can do against the city going "we want input, NO, NOT LIKE THAT" and ignoring them. Some of the stupid are city employees who can't be voted out and even if they do eventually get fired the money will be gone.

What? Do it yourself you say? Preposterous, we all know we're beholden to our adult caretaker to do it for us.

Seriously though this is the sort of attitude people develop when their parent makes them responsible for exactly nothing their entire life. I would also wager to believe that this fellow believes that all these services are free and not taken out of administrative costs that he pays.

Unrelated, but I was watching youtube videos of people getting absolutely financially fleeced on car loans and I was thinking, how many of these redditors are speaking from experience because they signed up for a loan into the year 2040. Since they talk about how much of a financial detriment a car is to them. I'm just sort of wondering if it's because they were stupid enough to do something like this so they assume it must be the same with everyone.

As far as good financial decisions, think about them signing a lease for a tiny apartment in the big city, getting food delivery, Uber, their obsession with alcohol and other substances, and so forth, and ask yourself that question again.

I mean look at the age - at 67 with no family, he's basically turned New York into a massive senior citizen's retirement home.

Roundabouts are great, they keep traffic flowing through less important intersections. They only suck because they have a low "capacity" for traffic, having more roundabouts for collector roads means you wont be stopping every 200 feet for a dumbass light. Road dieting is the biggest crock of shit in the urban planning space, because it doesn't work at all, and makes things worse for everyone.

My city has been pushing for all these traffic calming measures, and no one likes them, and they don't work, they are truly insane when it comes to pushing for this stuff.

But when you reach that capacity they just put lights on it and now it's just an intersection with a massively increased footprint, I can speak firsthand about that. At least it makes it moderately more convenient for pedestrians.

The only place where I'd be fine with roundabouts is single-lane where there isn't a lot of traffic. They're better than a four-way stop in those situations. Putting a multi-lane roundabout in a city center though is fucking asinine, no way would I ever support that kind of garbage, it's just endlessly confusing and if it gridlocks, dear god, you might as well get out a crossword puzzle book because it'll be the biggest nightmare in the world to unfuck.

Road Goy Rob went into detail about it - roundabouts work great when the traffic is so low that they can't "platoon" - or when every single intersection is a roundabout.

Just plopping one in the center of downtown doesn't do anything useful.

Amusingly enough the best thing you can do for downtown revitalization in a small town is add more parking. Put a big ass never full parking lot a street behind main street and watch businesses flourish.

Otherwise they'll all cluster outside of town near the walmart.
