That's what bugs me about Doctorow's "enshitification" theory. The whole thing rests on the idea that scaling up is purely linear and that there's no adjustment in costs as one does so. The invite system and the lack of images and gifs for like two years singlehandedly killed any interest that normies could've had in bsky. They launched a Twitter competitor without having one of Twitter's most quintessential features and stonewalled interested parties with an invite system that meant any potential users were turned away unless they knew someone.

He's spent the better part of two decades writing articles about online content moderation and the importance of Section 230. His articles are okay on the surface but he caught TDS in 2016 and basically never stopped shit talking about Trump. Of more interest is the fact that, almost every day since 2022, he's written screed after screed against Twitter concering the Musk buyout and Musk himself. He's very much a "if my side has control then it's free speech but if they have control it's censorship" kind of person.

He also has other writers on his website do articles occasionally and they're all kind of shit. Tim Cushing in particular is purported to write about law and order but really just writes embarassingly long poorly researched meltdowns about how much he hates cops. Also prone to get into spats with commenters and make comments like this:

In the end their anger and incessant whinging led me to censoring them from my Techdirt RSS feed altogether. There’s a couple authors that still write about how “important” it is that children be forcibly shown hardcore fetish porn to propagate the LGBTQIAP+ population, but skipping the article and making anon comments always makes it better.
