Games Journalism General

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

Today is the day chain blocking from gaming journalists is pointless. Although the reply and retweets are chain blocked, the posts are now public.
Imagine constantly saying shit so stupid that unless you ruthlessly blocked not just your major critics but anyone even remotely associated with them, you would be constantly inundated by replies telling you what a fucking retard you are.

And then some autistic African-American buys the platform and switches that shit off in one fell swoop.

Suck it you losers.

Hopefully this means more than just 1 lay off. Looking at kotaku right now their top articles are
"highest value cards in pokemon TCG" because there was a new set
"new star wars trilogy in works" just speculation
"no mans sky just got its best feature update in years" it's just extra save file slots, game is still missing shit promised at launch
"don't let these 19 games coming out this november fly under your radar" and somehow manages to mention AC shadows
"netflix reveals stranger thins season 5" this isn't gaming, but neither was star wars
"avengers end game directors paid to not make LoL movie" so?
Some shit about veilguard
And another article about Jake Paul having played Punch Out.

As of right now this troon is still listed on their staff page https://kotaku.com/whats-a-kotaku-who-works-here-458637663
Might need to check on it in a few days to see if the currently 10 people listed gets pruned by more than just 1 tranny when they eventually update it.

The Kotaku layoffs are real, like Moises Taveras.

But more importantly, ALYSSA MERCANTE IS GONE!!

IGN starting to walk back their 9/10 Dragon Age review

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is at War With Itself (archive link)
The overall result is that Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t the golden era BioWare game that I had hoped it would be. Torn between continuing its traditional role-playing legacy and starting afresh as a modern action RPG, the end result is an awkward sequel trapped in a cage made of reboot ideas.
Doesn't sound like a "return to form"

Might giving the review to a militant trans reviewer be a mistake? Somebody's going to have to do some woke pushups.

In the article the author keeps linking to the original review with a positive comment like a liberal not wanting to get cancelled or an adult praising some Kindergartners' macaroni art.

Gameslop, in a bizarre choice of actions, decided to lay off the creator of their most popular series.
Note: archiving sites seem to be completely fucked on Youtube, atm.

Hi everyone,
This video was recorded about a month ago, so apologies that I need to do this in a YouTube comment. One of the most difficult comments I’ve ever had to write.

I’m afraid this is the last episode of Firearms Expert Reacts. Due to changes at the company, myself and the team are being made redundant as part of those changes, this is the final episode.

After 200 episodes, I just want to say it has been an absolute blast creating this series and sharing it with you all. From the classic games and modern releases, and both the realistic and wonderfully cursed ones.

I believe I speak for both the Expert Reacts team of Adam, Chris and myself, as well as Jonathan Ferguson (the keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries museum in the UK which houses thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history), all of the other wonderful people at The Royal Armouries, and the other experts that we’ve had the honor of working with over these past few years when I say, thank you!

Every hour watched, every comment left, every Tweet, every Reddit post, every piece of fan art, every time someone in an online lobby came up to me and said “hey aren’t you the guy who shows Jonathan all those guns?” really has meant a heck of a lot. While I know many of you may feel frustrated or disappointed that these changes have affected content you’ve enjoyed for so long, please do be considerate with your comments, and be kind and supportive to my friends and former colleagues that are still working hard at GameSpot. They're still doing great, valuable work, all while going through their challenges of their own, and I hope you will continue to support them, and the channel.

Be sure to continue supporting the great work The Royal Armouries are doing, and you can always come back here and watch your favorite episode.

I’ll happily chat in the comments, or you can find me across social media under “IrregularDave”. Hopefully we’ll see each other again soon, or in a virtual skirmish online somewhere.

❤️

…I had just finished recording the Valkyria Chronicles gameplay too….

Unfortunately Firearms Expert Reacts will be coming to an end. Due to changes at the company this will be the last regularly scheduled episode.

Dave, Jonathan, Chris, Adam and everyone else who has worked on the show wanted to express their sincere thanks for tuning in to nearly 200 episodes of Firearms Expert Reacts, as well as the other Experts content, their yearly Loadout series, and everything in between.

Feel free to reach out to Dave on social media (@IrregularDave) if you want to share some of your favourite moments from the show, and know that the dozens of episodes that already exist won’t be going anywhere, and your continued support over the years meant the world to the team who worked on it, as well as The Royal Armouries (who you can still support over on their own channel).

Thanks again for watching everyone! We leave you all with a personal message from Jonathan.

“I'd just say what an amazing experience it's been reaching so many new people and sharing my thoughts and our amazing collection with them. I've met several fans who've said it helped them get through the pandemic and it definitely did me as well. Dave and the team built something amazing with Firearms Expert and Loadout that I know thousands looked forward to and they helped the Armouries so much.”

- Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history.

Personal opinion follows: if I had to say why this layoff happened, it might have to do with Youtube's increased hostility towards content involving firearms. It's important to note that the FER series is the only source of relevancy that the channel has with it regularity getting six figure view counts. Either way, here's hoping for Dave's continued success. :semperfidelis:

Yeah that's the only reason that makes sense is getting fucked on the ad revenue because youtube hates guns. Otherwise it's their most popular series by 5-10x the view count, and really only amounts to shooting some basic videos, a little bit of editing and sometimes a conference call. Really weird. It's more than just the gun stuff though, they find a tank guy pay him for an hour or two and "tank expert reacts to tanks in games" 300k. "armor expert reacts to space marine 2" 200k. Fuck, if anything branch out and find more experts they can pay to talk in front of a camera for an hour, cut down the footage and go all in on it. Doctors, mechanics, engineers, and so on. There's all kinds of shit to talk about with relation to videogames. Medicine is a big one, cars, breaking walls, planes, racing, fake ads/design in open world stuff, plants, survival games, on and on.
