tbh I suspect that EMP is a bit of a meme
I straight up tried a bulk eraser, like the electromagnetic "hold the button and watch your keys have a seizure" dudes from back in the days of magnetic tape for broadcasting, slapped that on the side of a couple of running computers and it did precisely jack and shit to them
magnets fucked with cathode ray displays and they damaged floppy disks and hard disks but those are usually shielded to some degree and inside of multiple metal cages so it's kind of a tall order to do that if the computer even has a hard drive in it anymore

nuclear emps and the weird explosive pumped emp bombs meant to simulate their effects use a bunch of charged particles to create an environment that induces electric charge in less energetic conductors in the hopes of damaging them. it's a function of area, small electronics are only exposed to the amount in the space that they occupy, but power lines and antennas are exposed to a shitload of it. the only things big enough to get a charge induced in them to become damaged would be anachronistic radio antennas and power delivery systems. power systems are already designed to deal with large fluctuations in power and are usually designed to be even more robust than necessary, and have failsafes, because people rely on them. they wouldn't really impact computers.

most of the research into the effects of this stuff was done in the 1960's - in hawaii by the US, and in kazakhstan by the USSR - and you know they used those places specifically because they were unexceptional non-critical infrastructure they had available to test on. that was before computers even existed and before we switched to fiber optics

I doubt we have enough replacements in the country currently to replace every transformer in a single major city, let alone such a large area.
GE is the only "American company" doing transformers in the US in the top 5. Siemens, Mitusbishi, Hitachi, Schneider (French, ironically), ABB in the 6th spot.
Virginia transformer is garbage but the only "wholly US owned one" major aside from GE, CEO is a jeet though (running the show since the 80s) and they cut corners like no tomorrow.
It's fucking scary that people are so clueless about the grid, when shutting it down for a week would kill millions. The SoCal bughives would die of thirst, and rioting, within a week.
No reason to spend a few billion in nukes, when you can cause more damage with one, or a few teams with .308 rifles.

Good thing we haven't had a few million military age males cross the border, without security checks.
There was somebody who did exactly that to Metcaf near San Jose, CA in 2013. Depending on who you ask it might have been people who hate the government, foreign agents, or a false flag. Take your pick.

Can't wait for four Senators that are hated by the entire GOP base to dictate Trump's cabinet picks.
I have a rule of thumb that I will never vote for the same senator/representative more than three times. These dinosaurs have been in for to long and I’ll be a fucking communist before I support them feeling like they have any sort of Job Security from me, America was built on representatives kissing the ground their voters walked on

Yes but also it's complicated.

EMP literally comes in 3 parts. E1, E2, E3.
E1 is very fast, and very rapid. It's a flash of 1-2 MeV gamma rays that smack electrons out of the air and create an EMP that rises to peak within 5 nanoseconds. Your bulk eraser ain't that. While this is the most dangerous to electronics, modern ones handle this well, and a metal case does wonders.
E2 is something that spikes over a microsecond from scattered gammas and is a bit like a lightning strike as far as computers can handle it.
E3 is slow as hell, tens to hundreds of seconds, more like a geomagnetic storm. This is what tends to fuck up transmission lines and transformers and the like.

This is also entirely academic because nothing ever fucking happens.

Look, Putin has my support if we wage war on thots and degeneracy instead of brother wars!

What are you, a child? There aren't any good guys, this is geopolitics and war. Both sides will endlessly retaliate to save face, upping the ante in hopes the other side will eventually blink. Most likely neither side will blink, and once things go nuclear, however limited initially, it eventually will become a full blown nuclear exchange that effectively ends the world. That's why you don't poke the bear in the first place.

Even under the theory of "it's all lord of the flies" you still have a giganiggerfaggot saying ILL KILL US ALL IF I DON'T GET WHAT I WANT! and the last thing you do is enable that. Even if you don't give a shit about your word and your allies, you don't let someone get used to that, because they just might actually do that after they force your hand.

Russia clearly wants to keep things limited to Ukraine, they haven't gone out of their way to attack NATO directly yet, and NATO just let Ukraine push things into Russia using our missiles in a deliberate attempt to provoke a retaliatory strike, which we got. We'll now retaliate with some other stupid thing or other, and were it not for Trump coming in a few weeks, we'd probably end up with boots on the ground by Christmas.

So all the shit all over the Caucasus and Black Sea, from Chechnya to Georgia/Ossetia, no big deal? I suppose we wait until he makes a special autism operation to annex the Balkans and pick a fight with Poland, then let him cry and threaten world devastation if he can't get his way?

Never enable faggotry. (Also, nothing ever happens.)

Trump is more or less keeping things somewhat frosty because both sides know he'll likely push for peace talks as soon as he gets in office, and this war goes on hiatus for at least the next half decade while both sides rebuild and rearm. That's the best case scenario for either country at this point.

Trump is also not ideological and probably the best bet for some kind of peace, which is why I am VERY glad Kamala didn't win, because that bitch would test everyone and not in a good way. That said, Trump is not a bitch either, and I'm quite glad about that.

The bottom line is if you let someone reeee and threaten to kill everyone they'll keep fucking doing it. You need to man up to deal with that. Trump's probably the best bet for that. TBH, I think Trump is probably sharp enough to realize he needs to give everyone some way to say "ackshually I won because," regardless of the truth of the matter. Biden was all too happy to let Russia bleed itself dry and test our weapons, and Kamala's a stupid bitch.

Wasn't there also some substation attacks in Virginia or the Carolinas a few years back? I know they started building concrete walls around some of them to stop rifles from so easily destroying them.

It wouldn't take more than a single dedicated person and a hunting rifle to really mess things up, if they were motivated and patient.

Yes, this. (FBI link)

This is exactly what's going to happen. Half the reason it's Bondi is because the screeching harpies Collins and Murkowski can't come up with a bullshit reason to oppose due to having the same gender.

I've heard that some people age very suddenly and very rapidly once they hit certain thresholds.

That's all I can figure happened there. That or overeating.

I know the electrical grid is fragile, but I figured it would be back up relatively quickly, yeah?
No. The massive amounts of DC current captured by long distance transmission lines would kill the transformers on both ends. Substation transformers are not something power companies have spares just sitting around. Transformers this size have lead times measured in months under normal conditions. Some substations have capacitors installed to filter out DC current, but it's not been a high priority.

The Carrington Event caused cross country telegraph lines to melt from the current overload.

"No more thread derailments about Russia/Ukraine!"

*finger on the monkey's paw curls*
*thread gets derailed by Trayvon Martin/Florida Stand Your Ground laws*
Silly as it may sound, and I know the mods want to keep it sort of on topic, I love the sidetracks like these. Sort of became part of the thread honestly, and it does sort of fit in with US politics in a real way. I won't be shocked o
if some trayvon stuff doesn't get brought up in her confirmation hearings.

Kinda unfair comparison (assuming this actually did happen) lol, we've had numerous solar storms hit the earth since then and they've done jackshit and a nuclear emp would be a fraction of the output they would of had.
