Honestly and this is what I think. I think Joe doesn't want to believe shmorky did something like that, because like hey if a close friend of yours was being accused of being a pedo wouldn't you be skeptical?
Also I don't think he liked how much of a jerk lowtax was being and most likely thought that he was just being quick to turn on his friend.
Either way defending him was stupid because I actually don't think Joe even saw the chatlogs tbh.

Beautiful comic.

This is exactly what I mean by saying that pedos/creeps/etc. can get away with anything as long as they use the right words and presentation on social media. There was a media circus about dog-whistle racism during the election, and the ugly truth of the matter is the same thing happens on the far left with identity politics. Shmorky said and did all the right things to make him into a victimqueen among a group of his peers. They don't want to admit that one of their own is a sexual predator, even though wolves hiding among sheep is an existential threat to the legitimacy of the group as a whole.

It's like back in the 80s and 90s when NAMBLA was using the LGBT community (well the T was hardly recognized at that point) as a shield. There was a lot of argument as to whether this should be allowed, with the pro argument being the community should be generally inclusive, but the anti argument being these scumbags are going to wreck our cause entirely.

And in the individual case like Shmorks here, it's the same way in-groups everywhere tend to defend members, whether it's cops testilying to protect a bad cop, Roman Catholic bishops shuffling around pedophile priests, or a non-religious example, the BBC protecting Jimmy Savile.

Like my mother once said, sick fuckery has always been around, but in secret. God Bless Dominican Republic's logic and wisdom, but I wanted to quote directly.

There is no cult, to have a cult you need the group to be centered around one person because that really strengthens the group, they sure have a lot of cult like behaviors and if someone who wanted to could get to the top of the existing hierachy and either turn the group against the others at the top, convince the others at the top to follow them or a mix between the two then they would be a hugely powerful force. The one person who is probably closest to becoming a cult leader is anita sarkeesian she has enough clout, charisma and money that she could start gathering power pretty easily but it doesnt seem like she wants to.
There might also be a few small scale cults that are centered around one person but its hard to tell because they would be very insular groups because otherwise it would be impossible to keep people in the cult in such a large scale community that generally believe the same things.

Main point not a cult but is certainly cult like.

Of course a fraction of Tumblr is defending Shmorky. When you're trans, your shit don't stink.

I used to be heavily into Tumblr and people will scramble to be ~the least problematic~ there. Once you drink the kool-aid, you'll do some shameful stuff to get oppression points (and thus have more input on an issue). Unfortunately, since Shmorky is mentally ill, trans, AND has a young audience (a majority of Tumblr, mentally and physically) people will fight tooth and nail against anyone who says otherwise because ableist, sexist, transphobic, shit-eaterphobic, etc.

Once the original post about Shmorky gets more traction, more people will believe it. Wait until someone pretty popular on the tumblr scene reblogs it -- more people will believe it then because, that's just how it works, I guess? The more notes = The more credible. That's how most people's trains of thought are on that site. Eesh.
