It tucks into your hand. When you reduce the hand down to its base volumes, the largest one is roughly a sort of cup shape. The mass that the thumb originates from tucks neatly into it when you fold the thumb into your palm. You can see it by looking into your palm and folding your thumb in as if you were gesturing the number 4. From this position just rotate your hand in such that your palm faces out (and move your head if need be) and it will form a very clean and distinct edge.
