Health insurance companies are a financial instrument/gamble on your health/longevity. They're literally people gambling on how long you're going to live or how many health issues you're going to have.

This issue was also solved by a thing called friendly societies, which were made up of people in a company or fraternity who paid into the system monthly, until the medical societies used their political lobbying power to sanction any doctors who served friendly societies.

But corporate loyalty is a meme nowadays, people are paranoid and distrustful of each other, and medical costs are so artificially inflated that a return to friendly societies is a pipe dream. This is the thing Fred Flintstone and the Buffalo Lodge poked fun at, if you need a simpler example of what a friendly society was.
