If he's there because he's "suicidal", then there's not going to be much looking into what makes Shmorky tick. Emergency psych admissions are mostly a bandaid and don't really address deep, underlying issues. He's probably told them that he's depressed because people are being mean to him online, that he's socially isolated, and that he feels hopeless about the future.

It's extremely unlikely that he's mentioned his sexual proclivities and inappropriate behaviour with young people. That's something for which he won't get help unless he asks for it or he crosses a line which leads to it being mandated - both of which seem unlikely. Actual help for that would require a massive, ongoing commitment on Shmorky's part. It's much less effort to just inhabit communities which tell him that he's a good person and that there's nothing wrong with his behaviour.

Honestly the idea of it being a moral decision was so far from my mind that I just kept going with either him being paranoid or knowing the law. I mean in the end he wasn't off kidnapping kids so he obviously has some limit to these compulsions or sense that they're wrong, but I have a distinct feeling he was probably interacting with a lot of younger people in fucked up ways in PMs or Skype.

He was going on some 14 year old in some old oekaki right? I couldn't search it up.

Hospitals can generally tell you if someone is physically there if you give him those deets, and the fact the first person she talked to seemed confident she could verify with that information makes it seem like they realized he was checked in as a risk of suicide and I imagine the response there is to neither confirm or deny because of liability.

But that's just a guess.
