Nick is from a different relationship to his sister, so any common parental failings are on Celeste. There's also a substantial age gap between them so he would have been the only child in the household during the later part of his childhood.

Nick's dad had a good job but his parents were not "loaded" when he was growing up. Nick was already an adult when his grandparents received the Petrofac windfall. Celeste worked during at least part of Nick's childhood.

Celeste comes across as being "off", so it's hard to know whether Nick was overly indulged as a child or whether he was able to do whatever he wished because she was disengaged.

That said, you're lucky to find a home (including apartments) in the greater metropolitan area with a price tag much under a million dollars here, and covid totally screwed house prices in regional areas as well. Many people will enter retirement still owing money on a mortgage and that will only get worse as the age at which people are first able to enter the property market increases. This is a global problem right now.
