i dont even know if tf2 is even a descendent of the arena shooter besides being a quake mod. the whole point of team fortress was to turn it into something else. it gets rid of the respawning items and requires totally different maps, it makes winning about having the right team comp on the map rather than controlling the resources on the map. there is no resource management in team fortress and that's by definition the only gameplay mechanic in arena shooters

Team fortress got popular from it's half life incarnation, and i don't know if i would even consider half life deathmatch or halo to be an arena shooter even though they're from roughly the same era of game design. they designed the multiplayer specifically so it wouldn't turn into one sided slugfests like quake matches, they have enough weapons and skill checks that you cant just guarantee victory by holding down armor spawnpoints

Just got done replaying the ME trilogy recently and out of the three games, ME2 has aged the worst.
mass effect was just flat out a bad game and i'm tired of pretending it's not. i beat the first game in like 2010 before the second game ever came out, because it was in the shadow of sequels that had yet to come out i think people gave it way more leeway than it deserved. But the game felt half finished and completely lacking in any of the world building that made games like Oblivion fun to explore so it was pretty much just an empty linear rpg in a world that felt even more dead than Phantasy Star in offline mode, and none of that world ever got expanded.

there's a set of expectations that a player probably has when sitting down to play the a game like mass effect and pretty much none of those things ever get touched on - you never upgrade gear, no world to explore, gameplay decisions dont really matter beyond a cutscene, the storyline gives you choices that have the illusion of being meaningful but are too pussyfoot to actually give you any ethical quandaries. the game sets up a very interesting world and then just decides to base the whole game around The Holocaust In Space.

it's not a completely irredeemably terrible game but the whole thing is a constant barrage of promisees of a second glimpses at something interesting that they never once follow through with. people are still obsessed with the single throwaway bits of dialogue about the pink space gypsies and blue lesbians they put in the first game that retconned in the later ones. just about the only thing i really remember enjoying about the game was that it gave you a quick time event to deck a journalist in the face for asking you a loaded question
 
I don't mind if a game is designed to run at 30 FPS or 60 FPS as long as it does it consistently and doesn't shit itself trying to run on it's own engine.

Eh, it's made by Asians so not much, it's rather mild shit. Storm does says she's a mutant and proud as an allusion to gay shit but X-men have always been an incredibly thinly-veiled allusion to minority shit.
To be fair, Storm has always been an extremely proud character, so I wouldn't exactly call it woke. But yeah, I guess that depends on how much you want to attribute that to the premise of X-Men

While they're not arena shooters, some of the emphasis on agility and verticality is still there. It's kind of ironic that as technology's gotten better, multiplayer maps have gotten so flat that you could build many of them on the Wolfenstein engine.
 
I don't care what anyone says, Attack of the Saints was a superb level.

I don't know if I can properly articulate this, but here it goes.

1. With the quality of some gotcha games now, if they released as payed games without the gambling and grind, they'd do quite well I think.

2. When a free to play game goes end of life, they should release it as a stand alone game as above.
 
120fps should be the new standard. Gameplay feeling > muh graphical fidelity. I just can't go back to 60fps. It's very unresponsive and janky when I look at it with a critical eye. It's only with 120fps that I feel like I actually get responsive gameplay. If I cared much about graphics, I would just go straight to 30fps and crank that shit up. 60fps is just the awkward spot in between that most gamers simply don't know is inferior to 120hz or above.
I'm extremely sensitive to FPS to the point that I'll flat out refuse to play most 30 FPS games, but I disagree. 120 is smoother, sure, but it's barely perceptible. 60 is perfectly fine for most purposes. And good luck getting games to even reach that in today's environment of 400k textures and unoptimized Unreal Engine usage.
 
The “Urban Chaos” series is pretty underrated as far as undercover cop/vigilante/National Guard-type games go. Though, the second one should not be a game that received “mixed” ratings. It was actually a unique experience trying to step in the shoes in both the S.W.A.T teams and rioters trying to destroy them.
 
It was the one with the dominatrix nuns. It took place at a hawaiian-themed motel and cornfield. That and the Lenny mission where its a small town with a garage and barbershop are basically the two best missions in that game.

The storm this trailer caused still cracks me up. It's one of the first examples I think of when it comes to gaming journalists feigning outrage.
 
The more I'm looking at it, the more I'm questioning the accepted narrative that Obsidian is a hard-done-by team of misunderstood geniuses that keep getting fucked by those DANG DIRTY PUBLISH-JERKS. I can accept executive meddling as an excuse up to a certain point, but after a certain point I can't help but notice a common factor. This is not helped by the fact that The Outer Worlds was supposed to be this grand return to form for them, and it just ended up being a mid RPG that was trying way way too hard to be like Futurama. If this was their grand magnum opus with the chance to take their time to do it right, I ain't impressed.

For as much as I love Fallout: New Vegas, I always have to appreciate that I'm enjoying it with the benefits of years of official patches, fan patches, graphical overhauls, and all manner of fan mods installed. This was not the experience you had in 2010, especially if you were a console gamer. If you were a console gamer, you got a fat pile of ass, lag and fail. My niggas on PS3 know what I'm talking about. And even on PC, you weren't that much better off, since it would take at least a few years for the fix-it mods to really get off the ground. Plus if you've installed mods pre-CurseForge, you know exactly what a bitch it was to install everything manually.

New Vegas is 15 years old. No workplace retains the exact same people for almost two decades. Whatever Obsidian was; it aint Obsidian anymore.

Just about any game out right now will run at 60 fps on virtually any GPU released in the last 5 years. I'm sure there are a few exceptions.

Something can be true at one point, but not another. It was true that LucasArts initially gave Obsidian two years for KotOR 2, and six months in knocked it down to one, and it's true that Bethesda, being the publisher, was in charge of QA for New Vegas. But since they Kickstarted PoE when they wanted to be independent and later on sold to MS, who refuses to take accountability for things, everything has been solely on them.
