Wtf, "legal parent" means jack shit. She could still go to court to officially establish paternity, get child support set up (even if he isn't working, but it would at least be set up so if he does start a job, he can contribute), and set up a custody schedule. Even if she winds up with full physica/legal custody, it at least establishes his rights and obligations as a father.
And it's not necessarily expensive, she might find a lawyer to do it pro-bono since she's a single handicapped mother.

Of course she text the new girlfriend. Of course she did. She just couldn't help herself, jealous little goblin can't see Noah escape her clutches.
At least that explains Noah's offer of a tell all to the Farms. Her actions must have really enraged him.

Thinking back to the hospitalisation saga, it's clear that the DCFS/CPS visit was the trigger event.
Did they arrive at the apartment to find the pair of idiots wasted and incoherent? Alex dangerously so, so they took her to the ER, to find that she was in metabolic acidosis.
Noah was drug tested, failed, went back to his parents so Ari couldn't be released to their care, so Alex's mother was called to take Ari.
The timeline fits, her silence on the key points says plenty.

These people are losers. Why don't they just let Ari be raised by Ma and Pa Smith until she's old enough to need to know she isn't their biological daughter? She'd be a happier girl.

If my son was such a failure he couldn't stay clean for his daughter, had assaulted me, and done all the embarrassing crap he's done... Well, goodbye, son!

I love how casually this was mentioned. Oh he was just mad because I did this wholly unacceptable and extremely bunny-boiler behavior, NBD. None of these people should ever be in relationships; God help the new chick from rehab after she inevitably gets knocked up, too. Cluster B women are terrible, but we often underestimate the Cluster B man and his ability to ruin the lives of everyone around him.

Yeah I agree, except as you noted, that would entail saying bye bye to Noah since he can't be around Ari. I'm sure Noah is still living with his parents because they've obviously enabled him to this point and I doubt they'll stop. Alex is just lucky they probably toss her a bit of cash here and there, as I suspect that's what she means by the Smiths supporting her a little.

As far as the vape from the vape shop being laced with fentanyl. Lol. Lmao even.

Unfortunately they're putting Noah over the innocent baby here, and the more I think about it the bigger the vein on my forehead gets.
They have ditched the little girl who sees them as the only parental figures she has, in favour of the freeloading junkie son who treats them like crap.

Well done Smiths, you've handed the baby to Jackie the alcoholic, the one who made Alex who she is.
Sterling decision making.

I don't want to put the Smiths down. I think they've been amazing. Just Ari needs them so much. Noah is a grown man who chose drugs over generations of family. But she needs to be with the people she undoubtedly sees as Mom and Dad, and doing the right thing often hurts, but no sober man would hate his parents for putting his child (his future) first over his desire for comfort. Let him go to the homeless shelter. He likes hanging with the derelicts.

I detest people who grow up rich and privileged who like to LARP as poor, but still run back to Mommy and Daddy. A real man would see himself to the door so that perfect little child has stability. Noah better hope he doesn't die before he repents for what he's done to Ari for his own comfort. He will burn in hell for eternity. Betraying your duties as a father is an affront to God, and not an easily forgiven one.

Well, they're the ones that raised that absolute failure so I guess they're probably not very good people either.

Sure, but if they're actually choosing that shit heap before an innocent little girl, this is not one of those times.
Turning your back on your flesh and blood is rough going, even if they are terrible.

They're definitely weak people, but not bad people. They need to be strong for Ari. Men have pulled themselves up alone from far worse than homelessness and drug addiction.

The Smiths could still help Noah out from afar. I've seen lots of parents with personality disordered/addicted kids who say "you can't live here, but we will buy you a bag of groceries you can pick up once a week" or "we will give you a Walmart gift card once a month for essentials if your pee tests come up clean" (fun fact, can't buy booze/cigarettes with gift cards!). They could even offer to help him with rent or a car payment if he peed clean and saw a therapist. I wouldn't begrudge that; parents love their kids even when they're immense fuckups.

They don't have to actually choose Ari or Noah, they just need to realize that Noah is an adult and can/should be figuring out how to stand on his own feet whereas Ari is a very vulnerable infant who has little to no stabilizing influences in her life. That's an easy choice if you aren't enabling POSes.

Noah might die using drugs, but that could just as easily happen under their roof. His life might be less comfortable, but he can keep himself out of treachery. Ari will suffer so much.

Mental illness is a bitch, I'm not going to harp on Noah for not having his shit together because of that.
I will harp on him not having his shit together because he has a kid. He needs to get tf out of his parents' house, leave the space for Ari, and then he can get his shit together or not. But Ari needs his parents.

I guess what bothers me is he's so selfish. He wants to be comfortable in that house. Sleep in your car. Sleep in someone's barn. Get into a sober living space or shelter. Sacrifice a little. Ari is a toddler. Why should she have to sacrifice her comfort to live with a stranger and have no real stable living because her dad made bad choices?

There's a decent chance Ma and Pa Smith yell this stuff at him, then he yells they're narcissists, and that stymies it. I hope if Noah reads this, he awakens to the fact his parents aren't narcissists. You know how you'll know? Because in about five or six years, he'll start his narcissist daughter is just like his narcissist ex and narcissist parents. He will maybe even condescend that she is only this way because of Alex and Ma and Pa, but he just wasn't allowed to raise her properly! If he had been allowed to be involved, well, she'd be a better girl.

It's easy to love a little baby because they don't do much and they're not much work. Loving a toddler is complex, as opposed to the newborn and infant stage where they're just kind of like goldfish. He doesn't love Ari more than he loves himself, and he has great reason not to love himself and no reason not to love her and put her first.

It really seems like Ari is thrown to the wind at this point. The Smiths were indeed her only avenue to stability out of this hot mess created by these two dropkicks.
We all saw what Ari was in Chicago, and what she became within a short space of time with the Smiths.
They have given her everything that those fools could not. The fact that she has been removed from their care and is now having to live with a woman she's only met a few times, in a place that Alex herself said wasn't suitable for a child is horrific.

She was thriving with Noah’s parents. And it’s so heartbreaking because they loved her the most. I can’t help but think about how scared Ari must have been after being taking away from her grandparents, and how wrought with grief they must feel of the possibility of never seeing her again.
