Asian Reddit chimes in to say that everywhere he's lived, people use gas mopeds and he doesn't even remember the last time he saw an electric one. He thinks OP is confused about scooters and those urban novelty vehicles such as electric skateboards and children's scooters.

I forgot to mention not only is he assuming that three cities in China having laws about mopeds implies "Asia", it doesn't even apply to China in general. OP is neglecting to even recognize the rural villages in China that are in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. I am 90% sure that those people who don't even cook using electricity aren't exactly reliant on electric mopeds.

I don't and this thread has been triggering my autism for for the past few pages. I live in Taiwan, I have never heard a foreigner or local call a scooter a moped. IDK why NJB calls them mopeds and use that term in his Taiwan video dispite living there for a few years.

I've always called these things "mopeds":


It's common in the US and presumably in Canada as well:

In some countries, a moped can be any motorcycle with an engine capacity below 100 cc (6.1 cu in) (most commonly 50 cc (3.1 cu in) or lower)

In most states, they're legally motorcycles unless they're below a certain engine size (usually 50 cc with a max speed of 30 mph), in which case they are mopeds.

They're a lot less popular than they used to be. The stand up electric scooter is what's cool now amongst college students and urban bugmen who never grew up.

Maybe it's a regional thing in the US? I'm Amarican, my family and I always called those scooters and the Canadians I work with call them scooters too.

Literally never heard anyone call that type of motor vehicle a "moped" IRL at all or online even until this thread and watching NJB.

Besides, mopeds are for poors, in poorer/third-world countries, they trade up to cars if they can afford it, bicycles and mopeds are for people who can't afford it.

or as an intermediate stage, 125cc motorbikes, which are very popular in western Africa (and were my first motors, before I had a full license)
they're a good entry into motoring, as they're geared like a manual car, run on ordinary petrol, have a lot more power than scooters/mopeds, and even the old ones will typically get 80 miles to the gallon
the only thing they're really bad for is is long-distance travel; travelling at high speeds involves constantly hanging on to the throttle and gunning it to maximum, which soon gets exhausting

Jokes aside- they don't care. It doesn't matter if you're a native, from a family of farmers or just want to live in a homestead. You must move to the bughive and if you want to pursue any cultural activities you will able to do them in a highly structured "third places".

In a weird way I think I sort of understand what they feel, but I think they're misidentifying what's making them feel that way. From what I understand they want something like high school where they can have opportunities to socialize with people and they think that by getting rid of cars on the roads and walk everywhere it makes it easier to make friends I guess?

Weirdly enough I think if they lived in a small rural town where everyone knows everyone else they'd fix that problem in their lives. But for obvious reasons they'll never give that a try.

For left-wing types, racism/colonialism/whateverism only exists when it's done by an opponent. Colonialism, for example, is "right-wing," so "by definition" left-wing policies cannot be colonialism. This same kind of logic is how you'll occasionally see lefties who unironically argue that Stalin, Lenin, or even Marx were right-wingers. Because those guys did bad things, ergo were right-wing.

That'd be a misunderstanding of what is going on. Yes, part of the reason why cars are better than buses and so forth are better is because it helps insulate from crime. That is not because cars are replacing the police, however, but because in our current society, good policing does not exist.
