Let's say you live in a nice house with a safe full of gold and a loving family. Your neighbor's house is locked inside a gigantic titanium cage, and you know if the cage didn't exist or was somehow destroyed he would murder you and your family and steal your gold. With this knowledge you have a button that if pressed would instantly kill him, would it not be logical to press the button? You go from living in a world with a person who wants to kill you and take what you have to living in a world without them.

Krugman got a lot of popularity from being one of the few people willing to speak ill of the Iraq War when it began, calling Bush out for it in 2003 when it was very much a dangerous thing to say as you could be canceled for it (in terms we are familiar with today). Doesn't mean he is smart, he likely did it just because he had a particularly strong case of BDS. Similar to how Jon Leibowitz was right when he called the same war as stupid but looking back it is obvious it came not from any sort of conviction but more out of desire to fuck over the other guy.
