One thing I have noticed a lot with my family is that they avoid using gendered language at all when referring to me. Not only that, but they avoid using pronouns at all - even they/them. This ends in overusing my name and saying the most confusing sentences because they refuse to refer to me with any pronouns at all. Of course it's still better than being misgendered but it feels a bit like a slap to the face. All I want is for them to treat me as their son and have referring to me with male terms feel natural to them but I'm losing hope of that ever happening. It took them a year but eventually they got used to using my name all the time, but it's been 3 and a half years and they still don't refer to me with masculine terms at all. It's always "my child" instead of "my son", "teenager" or "person" instead of "boy".

Yesterday we got sent christmas cards by my grandparents. My parents got "mr and mrs [lastname]" on their envelope, my sister got "miss [name]", and I just got my name without any title. The actual cards said "to my son and daughter in law" for my parents, "to my wonderful granddaughter" for my sister, but I got "merry christmas".

Anyone else's family do this? And is there any hope at all of them starting to refer to me with male terms one day? It feels really draining being at home because I know they don't see me as a guy. I'm stealth as a cis guy at school and work and it feels like such a relief to have everyone automatically refer to me as male with no hesitation. I dread being at home tbh and I'm counting down the days till I move out next year

When I moved out for university, I just completely stopped talking to my mom. I still talked to my siblings on call and texted my dad, but completely refused to communicate with my mom for the entire first semester until she broke and asked what she could do to fix our relationship. I laid down several conditions and said if she was able to meet all those conditions for 2 years minimum , I would go to family therapy with her. I said I can't promise our relationship is fixable at all but I'm willing to give it a go if you do xyz. In my case, I hadn't come out to them as trans at the time, so my conditions for working on our relationship were mainly about her getting her unchecked mental illness under control with medicine and/or therapy as needed, and treating my siblings better than she treated me. She actually did pretty well in fulfilling those conditions and a couple years later we went to therapy together. Therapy just felt like more proof that she was never going to even try to see things from my perspective, that she was always going to try to justify her past behavior, and that we would never get to a resolution. So after a couple of months of weekly sessions I said this isn't working and declined to go further. We now have a civil but distant relationship. However, my siblings were both still quite young when I told her to see the psychiatrist and treat them better so they at least have a mother they feel comfortable acknowledging as their mom. I personally basically said I was never going to accept her as my mother or even a mother figure because I raised myself entirely with no support other than money from their side. But my siblings have a real mom who takes care of them, cares about their feelings, shows them love, doesn't yell all the time for no reason. So, yeah, my relationship with her was too damaged but at least my short spell of going no contact gave my siblings a better life.

Not saying this will work with your family, and it might be harder because your problem is a family wide issue whereas mine was just interpersonal issues with my mom. Best of luck
