It seems that food is more expensive at bodegas (save for hot prepared food) and their are a limited amount of large grocery stores.
As such when people are given a choice of bodegas vs supermarkets:
- It takes longer for most people to get to supermarkets
- The price of hot prepared food cost less than supermarkets.
- Staple foods cost more at bodegas.
- Their kitchens aren't the best designed for cooking.
These factors almost make cooking more burdensome than ordering out notwithstanding the increased travel time and stress from public transit.
