Smartphones are the issue. And frankly? Most teens shouldn't have laptops at home.

This is going to sound like "this was the best thing because it was the thing around when I was the right age", but I digress... I was a young teen roughly when there were slide out keyboard phones easy to text on and only had access to a desktop in "the computer room". I could talk to my friends and crushes, I could browse the internet, I could play online games, I just didn't have the level of privacy to look at porn. Plus I didn't bring the internet absolutely everywhere I was at all times, which I think is a big contributor to social media addiction. It was a pretty good situation, and when I have kids I'll try to employ something like this.

Problems start when kids of any age have private, in-their-bedrooms ability to access the internet. Like on any device. If you avoid this situation, you can take away a lot of the problem.
