A council in the US says these googly eyes are damaging the art

Published 15 December 2024

A city council in the US has asked people to stop sticking plastic eyes onto sculptures around the city, saying it costs a lot to remove them.
The googly eyes appeared on a number of artworks around the city of Bend, in Oregon, including a statue of two deer and a metal sphere.
In a post on social media, the council asked whoever was responsible to cut it out.
"While the googly eyes placed on the various art pieces around town might give you a chuckle, it costs money to remove them with care to not damage the art," it said.

Many people commented in support of the googly eyes with one social media user saying 'But they are so funny!!' and another saying 'the googly eyes have to stay'.
The council also said that in the past other decorations like Santa hats and wreaths have been added but that this was different.
"While we don't condone the wreaths... and Santa hats, let's stay away from adhesives, graffiti and all things that can damage the art" it said on it's social post.
The council leader has explained that while they want the community to engage with the art and have fun, they also don't want things to be damaged.
So far the council says it has spent $1,500 (£1,190) on removing googly eyes from seven of the eight sculptures affected.

Of course it's the capital of the outdoor adventurist part of Oregon that gets upset about this and not the capital of the rebellious hipster part of Oregon.

That's just over 100$ per eye to remove. How hard can it possibly be to remove eyes from sculptures?

$100 could be wage + benefits/SS for one guy at barely 2 or 3 hrs work. That's a bargain and some lean government really, in my city it'd be at least 2 guys in quad-XL yellow shirts and there's a supervisor sitting in the truck watching tiktoks in spanish the whole time.

You need to send people out to the location. Have soap and cleaning solution that doesn't damage the sculpture. Some of these pranks use sticky substances that need to be scraped and carved off of their surfaces and can cause lots of damage. You also need to pay for gas for the truck or car. All of this is completely unnecessary and overtime work that some vandal idiot is creating meaning this is not in the expected budget.

You'd be shocked at how much business have to spend cleaning up spray paint vandalism each year.
