I don't even have anything against her as a person (no idea if she's a fucking idiot on social media or whatever) but I just wish she'd go away. Or at least do voicework without being modeled in.
I wish they'd stop using 1:1 mocaps of real actors in games, generally. I think that's at least partly to blame for the wave of ugly-ass models we've seen this generation: no matter how good a job you do it always has that uncanny valley feel. I felt the same about her co-star in the Jedi games; the actor looks fine in real life but his in-game model has a Crimson Chin underbite that is distracting in every scene. Same with Debra Wilson's bug eyes.

I assume this is done because it's way cheaper to mo-cap the same actor for the model and voice as opposed to paying artists to design something original, but it makes every modern game extremely unappealing, visually (and that's before you get into the motion blur, FOV and chromatic aberration shit).

It honestly feels like hollywood execs got into video games and said "We need to put someone people know so they'll buy the game."
Video games let you make anyone and anything, and they put fucking people from the real world in them. Its so tiring and it drives up the cost to make I'd imagine.

I wonder about this. Obviously if you use actual famous people (like Ellen Paige and Willem Dafoe in Beyond: Two Souls) that's gonna massively increase costs, but most of the time it seems to be 'oh hey, it's That Guy'-tier actors so they might not cost that much more to hire given the budget you're saving on artists designing and rigging original character models.

Either way, it's creatively bankrupt and makes games look more bland as a result imo; give me stylised MGS2 graphics over The Last Of Us hyper-realism any day.

I've been saying that since Halo 3. The hand animation with mocap reference looks far better than the nearly raw mocap used in other games. Maybe the one exception was Left 4 Dead 2, where they had unique animations for each character, because a fat guy would walk different from a skinny woman.

I always go back to Mass Effect Andromeda. The males looked just their face models, the women were turned into fish eyed abominations. Another example is the Ubisoft 2B cameo. And of course, the east have no issue with it. You can make the argument that they're incompetent, but that's not really a win. I still think it's done maliciously.

I think it's a bit of both. There is clearly an agenda being pushed to make female characters less visually appealing, but I believe there's also a competency crisis on top of that.

Nobody wants to work in AAA any more where they'll be crunched to death for years only to get fired after their studio's first game flops and the megacorp who owns them shuts them down.

Agreed. Kojima himself fucked over the appeal of eclectic designs with all the actor wank in Death Stranding. Kojima games used to have incredibly distinct designs for characters, yet in his latest it was just "some guy/chick" the impressions it left.

Kojima's ideal game has always been a 20-30 hour movie, it's only recently that we've had the technology for actual actors.

he also never made a secret of being a hollywood westaboo.

while true (it is a bit more difficult to get an attractive female than male, for different reasons), there's really no excuse when some coomers in a basement can whip together something more attractive. or the places modern slop usually get outsourced to - SEA, eastern europe - have no trouble either producing attractive females. at this point it's safe to assume it's all mandated from their western HQ.

Debra Wilson on the other hand, because she gets face scanned or modeled in so many fucking games is incredibly jarring to notice the same character appearing over and over and over. It doesn't even have to do with how she looks(it certainly doesn't help because she looks pretty distinct), just how often she shows up to the point of breaking immersion.
This happens in film a lot too. Remember when Ben Stiller seemed to be in just about every movie? People got sick of seeing his face. When actors get overexposed like that, the best thing to do is for them to disappear for awhile. The same thing has happened to Debra except that there is no one to replace her currently.

Sure, but with physical actors other than makeup it's kind of hard to avoid having their face show up. For voice actors? It's completely unnecessary. Debra doesn't need to take a break or anything, studios just need to stop insisting on modeling her face in game.

the go-to explanation/excuse back then it's easier to simply do the mocap from the voice actor you're using anyway (if you have to do a facescan you only have do do it once), and since games turned more and more into movies it basically turned into virtual actors for all the hours of cutscenes and shit.
there are plenty of cases where even established actors just provide a voice, and western VAs, even as entitled as they are, don't know any different. besides money there's really no reason they couldn't if they wanted to.

My guess is that we have a reinforcing cycle regarding Debra Wilson. She probably got the initial gigs due to, having a good agent, having a good reel based on her comedy (speaking) and physical acting (television sketches, movies). So for union scale, you could get someone to put on the ping pong balls for your mo-cap and does a good job. Plus since she's done it before, she probably gets it done with no complaints and twice the efficiency of a newcomer. If you have a 5 figure budget, and a weekend of studio time, you hire her and you'll be on-time and under-budget.

Now take it to current year, and the people working on these projects look at the headshot and immediately award bonus points for woman, black, old, and "counters the male gaze" and suddenly she's getting every gig. I've never seen her pushing the ideology so I agree that she shouldn't be the lightning rod for the hate. So she probably got to where she was through merit, and now in the venn diagram of budget/time limitations, experience, and hiring ideology, she's probably the only person you can call that fits all three for the massive amount of "unattractive black woman" mocaps that is plaguing entertainment.

The above youtube was on MadTV where they pulled an Andy Kaufman on Letterman. Bret was to go "off skit" because he was sick of people making fun of wrestling and Debra Wilson sold it so well people thought it was real. So you have the rare tool of good at physical acting and good at speaking and I'm not surprised she became a go to person for mocap.

This Tradcuck civil war shit is wild. Jon Del Aroz essentially asked me how many onlyfans whores I subscribe to due to me just disagreeing with him. Tradcucks were never our ally. What the fuck is going on?

It's because it hurts their grift. Their grift was being the absolute opposite of whatever the lefties are crying about this month. Too much titties in games, game characters need more titties. Too much violence in games, games need more violence. Having a reasonable opinion of let game developers make games and the market will sort itself out(and stop being surprised that shitty games fail) isn't in line with the ideology of their grift so they have to defend their position or risk looking like a beta soy cuck, and as a result come off like an asshole/idiot.

It's just insane performative tribalism from the other side of the aisle.

Jon is a buffoon don't get me wrong, but at the same time people like RGE are calling them fascist and playing victim? Only a few weeks ago people on "our side" were calling that dumbass from god of war "sexist and misogynist" for attacking that square faced girl Vara Dark.

Very lefty brained if you ask me.

Food for thought.
This video hit the right spot given the current division.
I guess conflict like this was expected. People are rushing to fill the perceived power vacuum.

My money is on things not changing very much any time soon.

People not familiar with her work may not realise how talented Debra Wilson is. I had wondered what had happened to her because she was my favorite cast member. I didn't know until recently that she mocapped so many games.

Once I heard Debra's take on why she does so much work for games, I fully understood her perspective. She clearly also sees work as work or gives very little fucks seeing how she doesn't mind them fetishizing and exaggerating her features to look like a human bug. It's more the insanity that she gets the lion's share of the work due to their diversity obsessions and feel the need to put her real face everywhere (I assume like others have said that if you are going to mocap, just using the real face is easier, then they apply the ugly stick [which ain't that hard with ol Debra, let's be honest], and bam, done) since it seems there are no other competent black women willing to do the job.

I genuinely don't give a flying fuck. I hope to never see a single black person in a videogame ever again, and especially this bug-eyed freak, that's how exhausted I am by the pandering and blaxploitation.

I remember the glory days of Capcom, during the sixth console generation, where they'd use a (very attractive) IRL person as the basis for their character, but then manually tweak the morph to look even better or suit their needs. Just look at Julia Voss in the remake of RE1 or Haunting Ground.

I think they reached the peak with this technology with RE6, and it all went downhill from there as they became obsessed with facescanning, and they also started picking uglier models too. Every time they use the likeness of an IRL person it looks off, it's jarring and immersion breaking.

Well, well, look, who came crawling back, guess that layoffs didn't fixed everything huh?:

The cope in the comments is just icing on the cake: "But, but, theyr...they're just an indie studio bigot, it has NOTHING to do with paying shitload of money to SBI
and other consulting firms, the situation is just TOUGH, you are all redditors":

Oddly enough, they have not yet created their Patreon page, so i don't know, if they are testing the waters with this video, or Patreon is still processing their request.

Merry Christmas Alx, Alex, or whatever the fuck your name is: you have nearly fucked into the ground a succesfull indie studio, which managed to crowdfund their first project,
scoring more then 600K USD on Kickstarter, got a publishing deal for your second title, hooked up with Epic for 1 year exclusivity deal, and then got ANOTHER publishing deal for your two next games, on top of one of them being released as early access title. Hope paying the DEI crowd was worth it, i'm sure paying hundred thousand(s) to SBI and denying their involvment afterward, did not hindered the financial situation of your company in the slighttest.

Now beg for me more, so i could laugh out loud at your pathethic attempts at saving your company.
