The biggest thing holding India back, in my opinion, is the caste system. The British tried to get rid of it, but it still stayed. It makes hiring and the job market way less merit based (as certain jobs are only allowed for certain castes), and hinders any upward mobility. Imagine it like DEI, except it’s been around culturally for thousands of years. It’s part of why I believe woke Indians in the west are a thing (as it’s a similar way of thinking to the caste system). India culturally doesn’t value merit as much as Elon would have you believe.A very often ignored point. Civic nationalism doesn't work if you don't have the same civics, and Indians DO NOT HAVE THOSE CIVICS! They have some of the most incompatible civics towards the american model that you could possibly have.
Additionally, people are pressured to marry within the caste they are in, and not doing so carries high social stigma. Then you get arranged marriages in the mix due to wanting to preserve this caste system, so men that really shouldn’t get married do, and end up passing down subpar traits to their kids. Indian men overall would be in a way better state if women were given more freedom on who they marry and have kids with, as some of those men really aren’t fit for marriage. The biggest argument against arranged marriages is India.
