Since we have a highly inflationary monetary policy now, keeping more dollars at home means more of our inflation is domestic rather than exported. However, aliens are a net drain on the government budget overall, so taxing remittances would give them a reason to leave, so we'd end up printing less.

Wouldn't it help any way since the only way to effectively to send aid backs is to buy something in the US and then ship it? Forcing them to spend the money in the US on goods that are taxed both ways.

Why taxing remittance won’t work:

If the rate is too low, it won’t disincentivize people. You’d need to tax it at like 60% to make an impact in my opinion.

It doesn’t directly impact immigrants. It impacts anyone with familial ties abroad, including people who are not immigrants at all.

Carving out exceptions for citizens and/or permanent residents will open loopholes and make it easy to get around.

People will find creative ways to bypass it, e.g. simply using a credit card (or prepaid debit card) to pay foreign expenses from the U.S.

You will have people stuffing cash in packages and mailing it and 99% of it going through unscathed and there being nothing you can do to stop it.

Data point: China limits the amount of currency that can be exchanged or otherwise sent abroad. It doesn’t matter. People find a way to get that money out.

The only way to stop immigration is to stop immigration directly, by canceling visa programs and deporting people. You don’t need to come up with roundabout strategies that won’t actually work.

Was it worth it though? We may have gotten Lord of the Rings inspired by Tolkien's experience in the war but a lot of his generation didn't make it out of there.
